Sad day in Atl...
Well guys today started off great, but as I was riding to pay my car note, I looked down at the RPM's and they went from 3800 - 0 all in the drop of a dime. I say aloud "This is not happening to me, I know this is not happening to me!!!" I get out look around the car and get nothing, I try to crank the car again and it just raddles. So I get it to Acura and I hear those dreaful words "Youve done something horrible to this motor" It seems that while driving the timing belt snapped on me. So now Im out of a car and still have a car payment, I had a 92RS, and my friend told me that I should put a B17A in it, what are you guys thoughts on this??

Weel thats the deal , I dont know the condition of the motor, the guys at Acura says its fucked, they said that since it there they can do the timing belt for $500, but thats almost half of a swap, so i just as well go ahead and dot the swap, because if they get it on and thats not the problem then I could have spent that money on something else you know.

if the swap is better than might as well do it. my timing belt broke and my engine was fine, but I paid about $500 after two tows, leakdown test, belt and water pump, and labor. But I didn't have another engine to swap into. I like my b18b though

If you snap a timing belt, it is probably also going to have some bent valves and other head components could be destroyed. Honda engines are interference engines, which means if the belts snap, you will have some nasty banging of pistons and valvetrain components. I would go to the junkyard and locate a B18 motor, I can get LS longblocks for 350 dollars in my area, I could only imagine how cheap it would be to get a head from them. This sounds like a good time to completely build the motor while you are going to have everything apart. Good luck with this.
But with replacing the valves, and timing belt, all that money could go into a semi-rebuild B17a, so why put more money into a car that I have no idea about manteince or anything for a car motor that I know the beginning of you know, its only $1700 for the entire swap. My car had about 137000 miles on it and I dont think the belt had ever been changed, so i know its partially my fault but hey I just need to know some alternatives right now and a quick way to get money.

That's not always true. I know many people with B-series engines that have snapped timing belts while driving and done no damage with the exception of the timing belt itself. Although, I have also seen the bent valves, etc. when it happens too... but that's not always the case, I say throw a new timing belt on there, they're cheap... Then do a comp/leakdown on it. if it's bad, oh well, take the timing belt off and use it on the new engine you just bought.

Yea I think I am going to go ahead and do the swap, but I wanted more info on the B17A motor, I would like to know your likes dislikes, and etc etc...

I know a guy that will always get the job done right because it's his baby... YOU!
Timing belts are easy mang!
Valvecover off, timing covers off, tensioner loose, belt off, line up gears,... now repeat those steps only backwards!
I'd do it just to save my bumhole from expansion when I get a nasty $300+ bill for installing a $60 part.

wow brian sounds like u got a date
j/m wit u dont get ur panties in a bunch...
but u should try puttin on ur timin belt and runnin a compression test like that 1 guy said u never know u might hav a perfect motor that just needs some reg maintaince that u forgot before ...

If you've got the money and can actually FIND a B17a, go for it! They're hard to come by, so if you've got the chance- get it! The only cons I could really think of are the loss of some torque compared to the B18. I love my B17a1. It's pretty much a B16 with some minor modifications, and a tiny bit more torque.

I'd just go to junkyards and get a head for $50-$100 and pick up the timing belt at Advance or Autozone for $30-40 and do it yourself for under $200. It would be a lot better than shelling out $1700 in my opinion. I wasn't sure where you are from, but the junkyards around Atlanta offer pretty good deals. Try http://www.car-part.com too. I get many good deals there. I did my head and timing belt on my 1989 LS in May.
