Default Replacing cabin (A/C) filter

My '01 Accord just hit 30,000 miles and the owners manual lists replacement of the cabin filter as one of the standard items to take care of. I have absolutely zero desire to take it to a dealer and pay through my nose for this service, but of course the manual doesn't say how.

Is it really complicated? Any tips on how to proceed if I want to change it myself?

Thanks.

You have to take out the glove box. It's behind it.

If you've never done one, expect to spend about 20 minutes.
Here's the procedure as I do it at the dealership.
1) Remove side cover on right side of dash, and remove 2 screws holding right side lower dash cover.
2) Remove cover located in console pocket in front of shifter, and remove right side screw.
3) Remove lower dashboard cover.
4) Open glove box and removes covers on both upper corners. Remove screws behind covers and 2 screws holding latch.
5) Remove 4 screws holding glove compartment at the bottom, and pull glove box up and out. Disconnect glove light connector.
6) Remove 4 screws holding upper stiffening bar and remove bar.
7) Remove 2 screws holding lower stiffening bar and remove bar.
8) Finally, snap cover off evaporator case and remove both filters.
Installation is in reverse order.

... and pay attention to the filters you take out. There's an arrow showing the direction of air flow.

That sounds like a lot of work to get to a filter, but it beats selling of a kid or getting a second mortgage to have someone else do it! Thanks for the instructions. I'll give it a go myself.

Is it REALLY necessary to replace these filters every 30k? The two filters cost 35 bucks. That can get expensive over time.

I've owned a few cars that didn't even have a cabin air filter, & I survived... So if it's really bad you could just throw it away. How about some of those discount mail-order parts places? I think I got mine at ManHonda.com for cheaper than that.

When I changed 'em, I was surprised how dirty they were.

I just replaced the cabin filters on my 01 accord atr 30,000 miles-it was actually easier than I thought!

I found the below link to be very helpful, with an especially good tip on removing some of the highly torqued screws you may encounter:

This link has some good pictures to use as a guide:

Lastly, a good overview of the entire process, again with lots of pics:

FYI, when I removed the filters, they were black!

Good luck to you.
