Default HELP!! possible CV axle dilemma!

well, after changing my clutch on monday, i drove the car home that night, and it drove fine.....
i went down the highway today and bad news.....it sounds like the wheel is REALLY off balance, but i get NO steering wheel shake at all.....it just goes thududududududud and then it will go away at low speeds...

lets see if i diagnosed this right...

-if it WAS a tranny problem, the thudding would be consistant with the speed of the tranny right? like, if i shifted to a lower gear, the "thudududd" would go faster?
-----the sound is consistant with the SPEED OF THE CAR, not the speed of the engine

-if it was a wheel/rotor issue, i would have major wheel shake when i hear the loud "thududududud"
------no wheel shake/shimmy at all...

-if it were the CV axle, it would spin at all times consistant with the speed of the car
-----i really do think it's the CV, if it were any other suspension part, it would have to rotate with the speed of the vehicle, and the only things that rotate are the CV, rotor, and wheel....

any input? i plan on knocking out the CV job tomorrow afternoon....thanks bro's!

check all your nuts and bolts......axle nut...lug nuts ...ball joints.....but it sounds like you're on the right track. Give your tires a good check over

swap a wheel around and see if its still doing it. that will rule out the wheels. i would go over all your suspension nuts/bolts as well. another thing u can do is raise the front of the car on a jack stand and rotate the wheels and see if the axle is wobbling at all.

ok guys, i fixed the problem...

it was the CV axle....went to pepboys and replaced it for under $50

...apparantly, the old CV's inner joints were out of place, that's why it thudded.....the boots were perfectly in tact, it was just the inner joints...
.
i'm sure somebody could use this for future reference.....thanks guys!

i personally never mess with repairing an axle...i just throw a brand new one on. but hopefully this works out...and check the bearings as well
