Default Trying to ID Si trany?

I have a D series trany, out and sitting on my workbench, and would like to figure out if it is the low geared Si model without having to put it in the car and run it. thanks

Got tha case apart or not?

You can tell later 90-91 Si tranny by the casting numbers near the tranny fill hole.
PL3/A000 means small bearings, DX,HF tranny
PL3/3000 means large bearings, EX or Si

That works. I bought two Si's from the auction and both of them have been swaped out for the PL3A000, Dam.
Thanks for the good info Mista Bone!
Any one interested in a couple of Dx tranys for cheap

Maybe not.........
the early Si trannys used the smaller bearings and may carry a A000 code. Some of the early trannys have NOTHING cast in there either.

Did you buy trannys or whole cars?
You can still figure out which you have without breaking open the case.

I bought whole cars. But one is just a parts car. I am sure the trany in my runner car is a dx cause I can cruise at
80 in 5th and I'm only turning 3500 rpms So I wanted to swap the other trans but I noticed it has junkyard markingd on it
so I am suspicious of it. How else can I tell? I am willing to split the case if needed

3500 rpm = 70 mph with a Si tranny

Tranny out of car........
Out tranny in 4th gear.
Turn input shaft (old clutch disc helps) 20 revolutions while counting the numbers of spin the diff makes (look in through axle opening)

DX = 5.5 turns
Si = 5 turns

look at the input shaft where the clutch goes..... right before the clutch spindles.... if it has no groves, its 88
if it has 1 groove its 89 , and if it has 2 grooves its 90-91

Somewhat. On a 90-91, there are two circular groves on the tip of the input shaft. On an 89 there is only one groove. 88 has no grooves and has a 21 spline input shaft, the other years are 20 spline input shafts.
