y1, s1 tranny..what's the difference?
i never thought about the difference between both tranny..but I'm gathering parts to do my b20/vtec now and I would like to know which tranny is the best and why
Jeff-
Jeff-
The S1 was sold on the Japanese market as a short ratio tranny.
I wouldn't considering using this tranny unless you plan on using your car purely for 1/4 mile racing or at the track. Simply because you'd be making too much revs for normal (highway) use. Also the trannies are quit rare and hard to find on the import market. If I put one on order now it will take about 6 months before the importer finds (a low mileage) one..
I don't want to discourage you just giving facts. If you do find one mount the ITR LSD (it will fit inside
) and you'll have a great tranny!

Jeff..
a Y1 comes on the USDM Integras
S1 is the Japanese version of the Y1 but with shorter gears.
if your gonna get a tranny hand picked and imported.
get a XSi YS1. stock LSD with short gears.
been proven to have the closes gearing ratio to a type R tranny.
but in cable not hydraulic.

"a Y1 comes on the USDM Integras"
Actually, the Y1 came only on the JDm CRX Sir
It was available with an LSD
the USDM integra is a YS1
the JDM Integra came with the S1 or J1.
S1 and j1 have basically the same gearing as the US type R
the Y1 gears are not as close.

A y1 comes strictly in jdm trannys, and some have an optional lsd. Y1's only where available in the CRX/Civic sir. The YS1 is the USDM version only found on the 92-93 GSR's. The S1 is similar to the J1 but the J1 have the best gearing for a n/a application. Both are good though. They both also have a nice Final drive 4.4 . Y1 has close gears as well but has a 4.266 final, very gay. Does anyone know who makes a 4.7 or 4.9 final for jdm cable trannys.
On the real "if youre lucky youll come across a Ys1", same ratios as Type R, but without nice final or LSD.

Umm....I've taken my S1 tranny from Indiana to Texas a few times, without any problems. The 4.4 final and .906 fifth gear makes things pretty rowdy inside- lots of revs. But I think it's worth it. The Y1's 4.266 final is the same as LS teg finals, and the gears aren't as tight. Shorter is better if you're gonna stay NA. And by the way, I don't know of any way to get parts for these trannies if you want to rebuild. USDM trannies are better for that, so when I go boosted, I'm gonna get an LS cable tranny.

I took my s1 to vegas from phoenix at 5g all the way besides the fact i thought it was gonna blow up, it still seems to run fine except my front bearings starting to make noise.

the YS1 is actually found in ANY USDM Integra between the 92-93. the difference is that the GSR tranny has the better gearing. my helms says so.
also the A1 and the S1 were both available in USDM 90-91 Integras. the JDM S1 has the better gearing here of course. NO ONE has ever listed the gear ratios for a JDM J1 tranny, so determining which is has closer gearing between the S1 and J1 is pointless without comparing them on a track, etc.
Last... the YS1 did come in Japan also. it is a very rare tranny, but it has gearing very similar if not exact to the 92-93 GSR tranny, and ALSO was available with LSD. which body it came in, i couldnt tell you, only that i know a guy who actually has/had this tranny (G. Samaroo aka vtec4gs).

the thing I hate about this thread is that everyone has something to say that contradicts the other people. That website looked reliable, are the specs on there accurate? Does the S1 come on any USDM cars or is it strictly JDM XSi integras? If it only comes in the ratios shown on that site, then it looks like a fun tranny.
check here for gear ratio differences:

the answer is yes and no.
the S1 tranny DID come in USDM 90-91 Integra's, but the gearing SUCKS (for NA). it is NOT the USDM equivalent of the JDM S1 tranny.
gearing for the USDM S1 tranny is the same as the 92-93 YS1 LS tranny. crap! (for NA
).
stick with the JDM trannies unless you plan on getting a 92-93 GSR YS1 tranny.

i think i have a 5 spd. LSD tranny in my crx. JDM im guessing. 5th gear is basically gone . it'll go in for a short period of time and then slip out. no clue whats wrong. guess its jus gettin to that point for a new one. i am wondering though also. if i could rebuild it? saving the LSD and the short gear ratio. i dont mind the high revs on the highway. also wondering how u can tell for SURE if its JDM+LSD i know its LSD cuz of tests of burning out. i never have the problem of single tire burnouts, no matter what both tires git going wit no hesitation. but what tranny codes on the actual tranny should i look for?
cheaper to buy a whole new tranny?
cheaper to rebuild?

All right bro. Here is the uitimate cable tranny combo IF you can piece it together, Get a Y1 ( JDM only ) because you want the longer 1st gear. second replace the 5th gear with a S1 ( USDM and JDM ) make sure you get the USDM version. This gear is so damn long is will scare you i truly believe that tranny can get up to 160 mph if the ECU allows. Finally get a larger final drive. It may be possible the the JDM ITR final drive will work (4.875) but i don't think it will. however there are several companies that make after market final drives from 4.400 to 4.8??. This translates into a very sick combo. because of the longer 1st gear and the large final drive, 1st is still usable. 2nd thru 4th are ridiculously short ( upshift to 3rd will feel like downshift to 2nd. and finally due to the long 5th gear highway driving will not be comprimised. ( 80 mph @ about 4500 - 5000 rpms have fun trying to piece this together however and good luck.
OK.. I have a YS1 tranny (Non-LSD, Oh well) and also a S1 tranny.. Both are JDM... Now, I need the best one for a drag car.. Which one would be better? And don't say get an LSD one.. cause that's not an immediate option. Thanks.

Speaking of trannies, anyone know the gearing of a USDM A1 trans?
I just picked one up and wanna know what kind of MPH I can pull on the Highway with my 9k RPM Turbo B16a

Just to add- all you people who keep posting Kat's gear ratios, they are NOT correct for the jdm S1. Thanks.
