Default im going turbo next year but i dont know what im doing!

i am going turbo next year and i want to know what you guys think of what i should do. i dont know that much about turbos so any help would help.

The thing is i not to long ago bought skunk2 stage1 cams and a b16 tranny. im getting alot of mixed oppinions on weather to keep them or not. i really would prefer to keep them so what kind of turbo size would you reccomend so i have plenty of time to spool up all the way with the shorter tranny. also what kind of pistons and rods would you guys reccommend that are extremely strong.

And what comppression ratio should i get? alot of people at my local track say i should go 9.0:1 or 9.5:1 why exactly does compression matter? why cant i just get aftermarket 10.0:1 or even 10.5:1? also what size injectors should i get?
my whp goal is 350-380 tell me how to get there!

First thing is first...READ about it. Then ask questions that arrise from reading.

About the cams; they will be fine. You'll need some cam gears to dial in the cam on a turbo motor. Ditch the b16 tranny and get a GSR or an LS tranny. Someone will trade you, don't worry about that. Compression matters because the higher you go, the more stress you put on pistons, rods, rings/bearings and the headgasket. When you have a pump forcing air into the chamber, you can get a lean condition, so 9.0:1 is a very turbo friendly CR and thats a great place to start. The more compression you have the more power you'll make at a particular boost level but you will sacrifice longevity of the motor. Also, the higher the compression, the more fuel you'll need and the tuning has to be more precise. If you have to much compression, you can start to detonate and then you want to back off the timing a bit. You power goal is not too high, but will require a build up. You can't get that kinda power from a stock motor, safely. And last, I would go with a T3/T04 Turbine. Great response and boost potential. this turbo suits any 1.6/1.8 DOHC Honda, especially a vtec motor.

You must read up though. read about boost theory and read about motor that others have built so you will know what works and what doesn't work. And last, do it right the first time. When you are dealing with boost, you can kill your motor VERY quickly. <--ask me how I know.

are you sure i cant keep the b16tranny? cause i just had a friend rebuild it for me and put a ls 5th gear and lsd. is there just not enough time to spool up all the way or what?
p.s thanx for your response it answered alot of my questions.

keep the b16 tranny....that longer gear **** is a misconseption.
As far as compression, obviously the higher the better; but it gets harder to tune.I would say anywhere from 9 to 10. 10 is very doable.
Check out Precision SC63, lots of people running them with great power output

Longer gearing is infact an issue with the trannys. Also, traction. If you have alot of boost, you spin a b16 tranny into third gear on street tires. With an LS or GSR, traction is more stable because the gear doesn't have such a high drive. Go with a Ls or GSR tranny, you'll thanks me later.

i got slicks to help me out w/ traction problems and i doubt they'll be any traction problems w/ 350hp
i really wish i could get more positive feedback on the b16 tranny cause i really want to keep it.

also am i correct about the reason people dont go w/ the b16 tranny w/turbo is because they dont spool up all the way or is it simply cause of traction problems??

it has nothing to do with spooling...you'll actually spool faster with the b16 tranny.
if you are spinning tires with the 4.4fd in 3rd gear, putting a gsr tranny or an ls(4.2) wont help you much....
a lsd will though.
Please go ask in the forced induction foum....they'll tell you about the shorter geared tranny.
pleople that have actually tried it..
It is not worth for you to change tranny's

sounds like you WANT somebody to say it's ok to keep the b16 tranny. If that's what you wanna do then keep it, you shouldn't need reasurance from others. Do your research and pick what you want if you don't like it then change it later. Personally I think you will be back looking for a gsr or LS pretty soon, but seems you are somebody who will be better off trying it and learning. That lsd though will help enourmously!

yes daddy...but if you are able to have enough power to get the acceleration to accelerate faster than the tires should the tires just spin out of control from right under you. Turbo does have a tendency to do that. Plus B16 will run way too high rpms on the freeway for this setup and waste gas. These are the main reasons why the ls tranny or gsr would be better, plus correct me if I'm wrong but the b16 tranny's are not as strong as the other two.

WHY DO YOU THINK I WOULD GO BACK TO THE GSR TRANNY? WHAT EXACTLY DONT YOU LIKE ABOUT THE B16 TRANNY W/ TURBO? I DONT UNDERSTAND WHY I WOULD WANT A LONGER GEARED TRANNY UNLESS THE B16 MAKES ME SHIFT TO 5TH AT THE END OF THE 1/4MILE. WITCH IT WONT WITH ONLY 350HP. ALSO I JUST HAVE THE PHANTOM LSD, WILL THAT STILL HELP THOUGH?

IF THATS THE ONLY REASON THEN GREAT CAUSE MY B16 TRANNY HAS LS 5TH GEAR.

mmm. if you have enough torque to break loose at full throttle in 3rd gear...once again a ls or gsr tranny WONT help you....
Its pretty stupid to change a short geared tranny for a longer one because of torque. If you are so worried about wheelspin, then turn down the boost instead....

As far as the rpm's yeah your right, for highway the longer gears of the gsr/ls is better; but i sayd that
But then again he already has a b16 tranny, so im sure he's used to the high rpms...no biggie

the Differential on older b16 and ls tranny's are weaker than gsr and itr; thats it.
he needs a lsd anyways...

Do what you want...I've mentioned that in your first quote it's your car by the way and your own choices will make the final outcome of your car not mine. But I did mention my opinion on what I think will happen which I have a choice for. Plus it's not only your 5th gear that will matter it is also the final gear which will lower/higher all of your gears accordingly.
But for the second quote,
shorter gears= more acceleration. end of discussion
ls gears= good for high speed and highway
statement is true, but more acceleration is not always good. First there is the issue of just spinning out your tires all the time (not sure cause never driven one around 350hp, but I'm sure you will be able to get the tires to out accelerate the car (IMO, NOT FACT! But fact is that it will eventually happen the more hp/torque you get)). Plus you may be right that the ls tranny won't get rid of the wheel spin, but it WILL help.
Second, just like you said about toping out your gears. I believe the b16 will top out at 140mph and if you are running to get some seriously good 1/4mi times I wouldn't settle to top out before the 1/4 mi is over.
And with boost you want to stay in gear LONGER and a tranny with LONGER gears will allow you to do that.
Plus if I'm wrong I will learn that soon too, within the next month or two. Because I don't care what others have to say about my set up. I've done the research and feel like for me this is the best method to go!

really? please dont flame but i didnt know that. could someone tell me what each gear ratio would be w/ a b16tranny w/ls 5th gear??

Default Re: im going turbo next year but i dont know what im doing! (murtnabila)

Turbo motors make more torque and horsepower on a flatter power band...All motor apps make the most power at a steep angle. The reason for having a longer geared tranny for a turbo engine is so that the tranny can put all of the power band of the engine to the wheels. With a all motor app, you need to stay in the higher rpms because thats where it makes its power. I do have experience with Turbo engines and I know that a GSR tranny is WAY better than a B16 tranny. Its all up to you though.

Get a book called "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell.. Thats almost everything you need to know about turbocharging a car..

well i im still getting mixed answers.
i havnt put my b16 tranny on yet i was going to this week cause i wanted to see how much it would help my current set up, but instead i will hold off and when i get turbo i will go to the track a few times to get an idea of what ill run with the gsr tranny then ill put the b16 tranny on and see if its better for the 1/4 if its not then ill just put the gsr tranny back on.
plus ill just keep both trannies incase one gos bad
thanx for all the feedback

je pistons/eagle rods. You will like it and easy on pocket. To get it sleeved. Make sure you look around do your research and get A LOT of feedback from people who have been there. Plus run them through better business bureau maybe you might come across a lot of complaints you don't wanna go there then...
