Default SMOG/REF Question(s)

May seem like a stupid question, forgive the NOOBiness- Anyways I swapped a DOHC ZC Motor into my 91 Civic. My question is, will I be able to pass smog? Also do I need to get my car REFFED or can I take it to any smog place? Thanx for the help.

It may pass smog, but the engine will never (REF)pass visual, just take it to mom and pop smog places, and pray you dont get a "test only" on your 2 year smog form.

Is it true that like an older Civic will pass? A friend of mine dropped a DOHC ZC in his 89 CRX and he passes smog at the test only places. How could this be? Or is this even possible?

I've seen SOHC ZC's pass like krazy, but I got caught @ a local mom and pop place and they said they wouldn't drop the bomb as long as I don't bring the car back lol. Found another through a friend who does the illegal smogz for $200 and it takes like 8 minutes. Thats how I smogged my DOHC. Just don't get caught or they send you to a STATE REFERENCE, aka satan. They're like emissions ****'s and they give no leeway. Stay careful in who you ask to do the illegal smog. - Darrell

So basicaly if I get my hood popped, I'm screwed? That sucks! I was looking for the best bang for my buck- and try to be "street-legal". Do you guys have any other ideas? I wanted to boost on it but it seems like that wouldn't pass for **** unless I paid someone like you advised.

You know what **** it if I get my hood popped then I'll just convert everything back momentarily to pass the REF. I know it'll be a lot of work but oh well.

Hey man, fight that ticket bro!!! What kinda exhaust is it? Article 27151 says that any exhaust system is cali street legal if it is under 95db. You can even purchase a meter that measures the db at like radio shack. Check out the new SS magazine they have a write up on it. Greddy, dc, and all those systems are 100% legal. Think about it, those exhaust shops they would be out of business if you were not allowed to modify your exhaust. FIGHT IT!!!

LUCKY is right... I had a lowered but stock- 98 Hatch, I would always get pulled over for them to do there "safety searches" . Nowadays more and more people that I know are getting introuble with them getting there hoods popped. Also your right I'm probably gonna get a CARB legal header and intake since that's what most cops want to get people for nowadays. Also does anyone know of a Good street legal exhaust. A friend of mine bought a Greddy Exhaust for his MR2 and it came with a sticker from Greddy that said it was CARB legal etc. Anyone have any ideas?

The ZC motor was available in the 89 Integra, and your friends car is an 89. As long as the motor is the same year as the car, or newer, it can be ref'd/pass smog. (does not include CRV motors, they're not able to be certified.)

Are you 100% on that bro? I dont think jdm dohc zc's are that close to usdm 1gen ls teg engines. There IM's are different, right? And the valve cover is different too, right?

It's been done more than once in San Diego, at the ref station. You have to use some US parts obviously, but it has passed.

you could pass the ref with it if you used the USDM emissions equipment in an 88-89 car
