a question about rebuilding my crx dx motor
to start with, please do not suggest doing a motor swap, i am not going to mess with all the wiring, and this is a project that i am doing myself. i am also not looking to do turbo or nos.
ok, here is what i would like to do - rebuild the engine giving more horsepower, more torque, and faster how to say get up and go through the gears. basically this car is going to be used for autocrossing and not 1/4 mile. i am not looking for the car to destroy itself every time i excellerate, but i want more power. i will be getting a stronger clutch and lightening the flywheel considerably, but have lots of questions about what i can do the the motor.
i would like to put in the integra 1.6 pistons for higher compression, but will they fit with the dx crank? should i use the integra rods with those pistons?
what crank should i use? should i put in the si crank? or should i try the integra cank? will it fit? if i change the crank, will i have to use a different type of clutch?
should i change the valve stems too while i am at it? or should i keep them stock crx dx? is there anything that will fit that will make a difference?
okay, one more thing. i want to keep everything stock to keep the cost down to a minimal while rebuilding this engine. there is however, one thing that i want to change to be non-stock. i would like to put in a performance cam. i would like the racing cam in it, but don't think i could control the idle for normal driving. this car is also a daily driver in the summer, but not all the time now that i have another car to drive. i was wondering if there were any type of performance cams that are somewhere inbetween the racing cam and stock cam. something for like street performance as opposed to racing. does anyone know where i can get one? and, will i have a problem controlling the idle? i know the racing cam we put into our ep 86 crx si can only handle racing. it would never make it on the road, if the car were actually street legal. the engine couldn't handle the car running for that long.
OR does anyone have any other suggestions that will help this car go faster. keep in mind it is not the multi-port si engine, but the dual point dx engine. anyway, thank you for all the information in advance. i hope i will get the answers to these questions.

OK, this isnt what you are going to want to hear, but here goes. If you dont want to mess with a VTEC motor, at least get a CRX Si motor and rebuild that, or maybe even a ZC, those bolt right in. Sorry for saying exactly what you didnt want to hear, but its not very economicaly wise to rebuild something thats gonna make 100 WHP, when you can get a ZC or LS motor for cheap and have a way better platform to build from.
Going through all that grief of integra pistons and crank makes that wiring look like plugging in a lamp into the socket......Atleast a Si or Zc....but suck it up and do the swap
the Teg or any 1.6L pistons will lower compression to about 8.0:1, the 1.5L pistons are 3mm higher pin height.
1.6L crank won't fit either, nore will the rods.
First mod would be to go MPFI. That alone is a 10-12 hp bolt-on, then add AEM long tube intake for another 8-10 hp.
Food for fodder, I got 135 hp out of a 93 DX motor (102 hp) which came with MPFI with just easy bolt-ons and a CRX Si cam.

The hot ticket would be to swap in an Si engine since this has a forged crank and a better head- non-CVCC. The interesting part is getting the FI to work. A popular upgrade is to add dual Mikuni or weber sidedraft carbs and a header to a good rebuild. An old Jackson racing brochure quoted 120 hp with the Mikunis, their header, and a good exhaust on a stock Dx engine. The Si figures should be slightly higher.
FYI- I have an SI engine that I want to sell, if interested. Excellent candidate for rebuild...
Good luck,
Devin
