How do you know when it's time for a new battery?
... other than it being completely dead.
The battery in my '99 Accord has ~ 65,000 miles and almost 6 years on it (six years come early October). The car still starts and runs fine, but over the past six months I've noticed that little things will cause the battery to die to the point that I need a jump, things like leaving a door ajar overnight (with the interior lights on), and today my wife left the headlights on for about 20 minutes with the engine off, that was enough to make the battery weak enough to not start the car without a jump.
And assuming I need a new battery, do I just take the old one to Sears, Wal-Mart, K-Mart, etc and exchange it in? I know nothing about batteries since it's so infrequent that I've changed them, are there good and bad brands / models of batteries out there? What do you recommend for a '99 Accord? I don't have any extra stereo equipment or anything pulling extra power.
Thanks!

after couple of good deep discharge(for example: left headlight on overnight, glove box lamp won't turn on, etc)
the lead grid will start to loose it's ability to hold charge, that's 6 years out of your battery, very impressive

go autozone, they got free battery test... the higher cracking point, the better battry is... (i remeber somethign like that, not sure, u can ask autozone too, they get answer.)
Any old battery will pretty much do the job you need it to do which is strictly starting the vehicle. Of course the more expensive have more cold cranking amps and may be able to hold their charge better but as long as you don't have any serious draw on it a good old 45 dollar battery will do you fine.
After about two months upon purchasing my 96 accord, the battery finally went bad one day with no signs of being bad or nothing. It was from '98 also. I was impressed that it made it 6 yrs!! I just went to Walmart and got a new battery, and no problems since.
