D15 VTEC swap info

Default D15 VTEC swap info

I have a 95 dx with a d15b7 non-vtec engine and I have a few questions about a possible d15 vtec swap.
First, would I need to get a new transmission? I don't think I would because it's still a d-series engine but I want to make sure.
Second, Is there possibly a better swap for about the same price?
Third, I have never done and engine swap before and I was wondering if it was something that would be fairly simple or if I should just have someone else do
it.(money is kind of an issue)
Fourth, would very many parts from my old engine work with my new one? Such as, spark plugs(have fairly new DENSO iridum plugs), spark wires, preformance header, cold air intake.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!!

My current engine is in good condition but I've been told that my car will have a lot more potential hp if I get a vtec engine even though i'll only see about a 25 hp instant increase.

swap is somewhat easy but if you haven't done stuff like changing you axle or something like that it could take some time. You will need to learn while doing it. Headers will transfer, intake will transfer, I think even dx intake matifold is the same as z6 and jdm d15b. I don't know about the sparkplugs I think they should but I would check the part numbers. Don't use aftermarket plug wires first, second you can use dx spark plug wires but they will not fit all the way in, it's a temporary fix.

You can use stock tranny but gears are longer then z6 tranny, at least plan for feature upgrade.

Something cheaper then jdm d15b is z6 but hard to find one.

Hi just the did the swap about a month ago. It's relative simple, just unbolting stuff. No you don't have to get a tranny with the engine swap. You can use your D15B7 tranny. I did the swap because I blew the head gasket on my D15B7 and water got into the engine. It's a simple problem to solve but when I found out a D15b VTEC was only going to cost me $320 I went with the swap. You will feel the difference after the swap, the just way D15B sounds when first fired up was worth the time it took to do the swap. I did it for the experience and it was priceless... can't get better than that.

Most of the parts on your old engine will work on the new one. I found that the only part that didn't work was the spark plug wires. I bought brand new NGK wires for my D15B7 but it had adifferent seal around the valve cover so it wouldn't fit properly. Other than that when I bumed parts off of my old engine, D15B7, it worked great on my D15B VTEC. Infact, it's nice to have a parts engine laying around.

Forgot to mention; wiring the VTEC was pretty exciting. After reading all them posts on the forums regarding the difficulty or the problems ppl ran into I was expecting something tricky or complicated but it was one of the most simplists wiring tasks I had to do... That was fun, everything feels great when you get it to work.

The only problem I have with the swap was getting the damn car to stop throwing CEL 1. I haven't been able to get that problem fixed yet even after I put in a new o2 sensor, once I get it solved and SMOGed, I will be a very happy camper.

If you run into any problems during the swap, use HT.

All engine, all the way.

Where did you find one for $320? The cheapest I can find is $475 plus shipping.

Thanks for the help. I do have another question though. What car does the d15 vtec come from. Is it a civic or some other honda. I just can't figure that out.

civic vti,
its an EG style car.

yo the d15b7 is actually a pretty good motor for what it is.

basically the d15b vtec feels like a peppier d15b7 until 5500 where it breathes alot better due to the vtec and better intake setup.
it also revs a bit higher.

If you're going to boost it, and its your first time boosting. I'd say just boost the d15b7,
if it blows(and its your first time, the chances are higher) then swap in a d15bvtec or d16z6.

definetely the parts engine is handy.
when you run into problems you can just swap in "good known" sensors and pieces off
your old motor to rule things out as the cause.

also you CAN use non-vtec plugwires. but you need to trim some rubber off where they mount to the valvecover, so they go in deep enough
the dizzy will work too but it mounts really fuct to the head.

you use stock wiring harness and just add 2 wires for the vtec (really easy), and possiblly will have to hook up 4 wire o2 depending on the ECU you are runing.

I've heard of the Vti but the only vti engines I had ever seen were 1.6's.

what ECU are you running? if its p28 its just normal p08 is the ECU made for the JDM VTi motor

yeh, a note about the 02 sensor thing,
the p28 wants to see a 4wire sensor,
the p08 wants to see a 1wire.

they're both similar ecu's,
d16z6
d15bvtec
respectively..

dude just go find a smog shop that doesnt give a ****.

they'll check ur **** over,
but doubt they're gonna notice that your d15b isnt a d15b8 or d15b8 or whatever,
even if they did look at the engine code, it'd just be missing a number, I wouldnt expect them to think much of it.

aside from that, all they do is test the emission gasses, that you have a cat,
your timing, and a few other little things.

not too hard to get through.

You have to be serious about it when you get smacked by the cops and they send you to the bar ref, or whatever its called.

but for a normal smog, while cali is gnarly with it(ur on a dyno, so if your emissions are shitty u aint gonna pass), its still not that tough to pass!

Make sure your cat is working right, thats the biggest thing!

luckily i have a d16z6 laying around but haven't got the chance to install it yet cuz i need new **** for it. Like water pump, timing belt, axles, stage2 clutch, ultralight flywheel.

All those horror stories come from fucktards not running stand alone fuel management, such as hondata, aem ems, or uberdata
