Default AEM INTAKE RE-CHARGE KIT

when cleaning out the short ram intake, is there a difference on the cleaning kits.. between the AEM one... and the K&N cleaning kit?

Use 409 to clean the air filter.

Make your own oil. Its just a vegetable oil with a color dye!

really? I think I'm gonna try this cause I have a no name aftermarket air intake/filter, and it's dirty......was thinking about buying a cleaner kit........but then I saw this. What kind of vegetable oil (or doesn't it matter), and how much should be applied, and how? Thanks

Not sure what kind of oil is best, but I have gone thru AEM's buildings and saw everything that they do to make filters. You can go thru the kitchen and try different ones out, hey, its only cleaning the filter and applying new stuff.

I have yet to try it myself since I saw how they are made, but I plan on getting a cheap spray bottle and trying it myself when it comes to cleaning my filter next time.

Raid my mom's cabinets next time I am there, she has multiple types of oil and food coloring!

Just apply it like you would a normal filter recharge kit.

hmmm, so you would use like a cooking oil spray......like PAM. I don't know if I want to try this till someone else tries it first .......then again whats the worst that can happen....get some cooking oil coating my sensors

so clean the intake filter element by soaking it in some 409/water solution, then let it completely dry, they spray it down with some PAM cooking spray............

Why risk messing up the filter and letting harmful chemicals in the engine (unless you are 100% FOR SURE) instead of just spending $10 on a cleaning kit that will last ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND MILES if not more?? I'm still on the same cleaning kit I had when I had a K&N on my old Camry, and I've put at least 70K miles on my current K&N filter.

Of course, my filter is in the stock airbox, and a CAI would probably get dirtier, quicker, but still, the cleaning kits are good for many cleanings and re-oilings.

I don't, so I would have to go buy the recharge/cleaning kit. But I have an old can of Pam lying around, and a bottle of 409 so I was thinking why not try his suggestion, but the he said he hasn't actually done it..........so I'm not sure I want to be the guinea pig for this
It's not because of the cost of the cleaning kit; I'd be happy to buy one, but free fixes are always cool...........so long as they don't mess up anything.

Harmful....no, vegtetable oil is far from harmful. It wont hurt your filter either. The filter element is just cotton. They use a machine that feeds a roll of screen, a roll of cotton, and a second roll of screen and form it into the shape they want and crimp it together. Then using molds, made out of CNC aluminum, they mold the silcone ends onto the filter.

They have huge containers of the oil laying around, uncolored. Just add the dye and spray it on.

PAM does not work! Its not the same kinda of oil.

Next time my filter needs recharging, I'm going to try it and do a writeup...if your chicken, I'll be the first.

haha
<------------------flaps arms while folded and simulates chicken squawking

that would be good, and definitely do a write up . If not pam, what other kind of spray oils are there.........but then I would have to buy it and that would contradict the point of using cooking oil and 409

Yeah well 409 is pretty stout stuff.

Sheesh ya'll are some cheap@$$es up in here

The red dye does have a purpose, so you can see any spots that you may have missed when applying oil to each pleat in the filter as directed by K&N, or to see where you have applied already so your filter isn't drenched in oil (which can clog up sensors and get all kinds of gunk in your intake manifold, etc).

I'll stick to doing it right w/ my K&N cleaning kit.

The oil is used to keep the filtered dirt in suspension, rather than clogging the media as done on normal cotton filters.

i think it also acts as a barrier to moisture as well since oil repels water. obviously it doesn't do much if its sprayed with large amounts of water or is submerged though...

Just get a recharge kit, it's only about $10.

hahaha Vegetable oil? Is food coloring oil based? From what I know, isn't that sh*t water based? How would any oil (vegetable oil) be able to mix with a water based liquid (food coloring)?
