Q: '98 Accord LX - what is needed to upgrade to EX engine
Hi experts,
Do you come across someone who put a '98-'02 EX engine/tranny on a LX? Is it a plug and play solution (like putting another LX engine/tranny on the engine bay) or is it requires lots of re-wiring? I did some searching and there're not a lot of places mentioned about that engine, most of them just list B16/B18/H22 and is the EX/LX engine both has the code 'F23A1'?
Thanks in advance!

I believe theyre the same engine, the headers may be different but that would be the only change...
I would'nt bother changing engines, if you were going to go to that effort, i'd put an H22 in and call it a day, it would be much better in the long run...

Yeah, the LX has an restrictive exhaust manifold, the EX has a less-restrictive header, still not aftermarket quality though.
Excellent! Thanks for the quick response! By the way, is a H22 swap requires little re-wire like the B16 swap in Civic? Reason why I asked is from what I know, H22 comes with either JDM Accord or Prelude and not USDM Accord...
H22A- accord type-r engine DOHC VTEC
H22A1- 92-96 prelude VTEC engine DOHC VTEC
H22A4- 97+ prelude engine DOHC VTEC
Thanks again!

Well do you have an automatic or a manual?
Dropping an H22 into a 6th gen is not easy, but it's not impossible. The engine goes right in, but wiring has to be done i.e. the EGR, IAC, Dizzy and resistor box.

Thanks for the update, Bionic. It's an auto so I assume that might be even more complicated. Anyway, all these begins from my friend's car has a low compression on one of the cyl, and I'm trying to help him out looking into different possibilities... cost saving is the goal, but it's also good to have some extra power.
Yeah money is always a factor.
Doing the auto to manual conversion can cost you a pretty penny, but it's definitely not impossible do accomplish.
Are you planning on doing the swap, or are you going to drop it off at a shop?
If you know what you are doing, you can save a thousand and more, but if you are unsure, I would recommend getting it done somewhere. Otherwise you will drive around with engine lights, etc.

Thanks again for the info. I'm having this CEL code 302 on the car and am wondering what is the best way to fix it. Or if I should just do something in a bigger scope like engine swap. Guess with all these hassle it might be better to just try to rebuild the head or fix the injector...

Hum... I took the car to mechanic and he said the code is 302... something about the misfire. Any ideas? Thanks

what's your mileage? and how long have you owned the car for? Where did the car come from (i.e. from california...from the east coast...etc.)
You should upgrade to a set of Accord EX swaybars (or was it 3.2 TL??), front strut brace and some springs. THat will sporty-up your ride.

to do an h22 swap in your car you'd also have to swap your tranny. Possible but not really cheap, can cost anywhere from 4-5k+. You should be able to find an f23 engine in a junkyard though for ~$1000 or less
