CA smog failed at honda dealer please help!!
Hi all ok wife took our 94 accord with 148k miles on it in for a smog test the other day only reason we are smoging the car is because its from florida and we are going to sell it and from my understanding seller is responsible for smog.anyways we took it in they ran the test it failed they said they could diagnose it for 89.00 we said go for it.They called us back and said who ever installed the last timing belt had it off by one tooth ?? would car run run bad if that was the case ??would cost 300.00 to adjust said ok fix it.btw timing belt and water pump and oil balancer seal was replaced by clasic honda back in florida when the recall came out for oil balancer seal thing so will be calling american honda on the repair cost for that one.Ok so they adjusted the belt ran the test again FAILD!! Now there saying its failing because of the distributer they say because its not a genuine honda distributer its failing because theres no sensor in after market ones that adjust how rich the car runs.well i put the distributer in myself only reason i replaced it was because the Oring inside was letting oil get in the distributor i checked over the original and the new distributor they looked identical if i can recall there was no electronic sensors or even anything that resembled a sensor and i think it was a oem distributor so wouldnt that be the same anyone know if the hondo distributors have a sensor inside man i fell like im getting taken here any help please please
sounds like they are scamming you ,if your timing belt was of a tooth your car wouldnt run right the idle would be radical (up and down ) as for distributer i dont know how much that would affect smog , as for the print out and give us the numbers of the smog test , my guess proably just need a new cat ( most common smog problem or o2 sensors ) dont let the dealership take you for your money , they are right to use OEM parts but the do very little repair to there cars , my friend works at honda they smog most newer leased cars or trade ins that they will be saleing on there lot those cars pass smog about 98% of the time

Make them NAME that sensor! Better yet, call Honda customer service & say what that dealer told you. If it's entirely missing a sensor you'd have thrown a CEL immediately when you installed it.
Camshaft timing off by only 1 tooth might be kinda subtle?? That's almost believable, depending on which direction it's off & how good you are at noticing small performance changes.
