$120 to install exhaust?! more problems..
So today I go down to "mighty muffler" to get my DC 4-1 header, hi-flo cat, and greddy SP system installed in my teg. The guy quoted me $120 bucks
to put it on. So i say BS, he looks up in his book and it says '0.8-1.0 hours' to do the job.... hence maybe 30-60 bucks.
So he still says it takes over 2 hours and the price is $120--f that. So i go to auto zone and buy ramps($23) and attemp to install it myself... but of course the bolts are super rusted, and i cant get it off the hangers.
What the hell do i do? Find another muffler shop? Get some rust-breaking stuff? help!

Get underneath that biotch and spray the crap out of all the bolts with WD40. That should do it and if not, just try to get them off and if they break get some new ones.

Spray some pb blaster on the bolts (found at autozone or any local automotive store) and soak it overnight if possible. Breaker bar might be a good idea as well. Some bolts may be difficult to get to with a breaker bar because of limited space (ie the bolt located on/near the top of the cat) Anyways good luck.

Gotta love harbor freight

Ok, well we tried a few pipes as breaker bars, and it seems like the bolts are going to round off or break before they become unrusted. It's just so darn hard to put any torque on the bolts when they are flexing on rubber hangers.
I think i'm going to try that PB blaster or WD40 and try again. If not, it's going back to the muffler shop i guess. How much have you guys paid to have your cat-backs installed?

I remember that i didnt want to attempt my header install, that was $80. The only install that i havent done myself besides flywheel and clutch. When i install my exhaust i took of the mid-pipe as one section because i got a test pipe at the same time to avoid those cat bolts
The header to cat bolts were hard but they eventually came loose from a WD40 drenching and me kicking the wrench.

First of all I dont see the point in having a shop install bolt-ons. Just get some friends together and make a day out of it. I actually enjoy working and install stuff on my own car.
When my girl got her exhaust I taught her how to put it on and barely did any of the work besides breaking the bolts. Yes, they were hard and rusted.

Why bother to loosen them if they are just gonna be stripped and rounded when you want to put on the new exhaust? Just cut them and buy some new exhaust bolts from autozone.

it would be easier, for me, to just try to loosen it first.... if it still doesnt wanna come off, then i'd cut em

I guess it depends on where you live with what to do, but basically I would simply cut off the bolts with a cutter or hand grinder. PB, liquid wrench, WD 40 usually don't help much on seriously rusted exhaust stuff from northern states. If you can't find a cutter or grinder, then you might try putting a blow torch (propane torch) on them. That breaks all rust bonds on the bad rusted stuff. Anyway, leave the blue flame on them for about 5 minutes. If the bolts will ever come apart this is the only way it will happen if the above rust dissolvers don't work.
