Broken axles with slicks?
Is that (Broken axles if you use slicks) a definite thing or is it a rare situation?
I ask because i was interested in buying some slicks because i've got some stealies on order....and wanted to know if it'd just be easier...cheaper...safer to just get drag radials...
...the safe way out
i guess

a lot of power, and slicks, can break stock axles. slicks with stock or close to stock power shouldnt be a problem. you probably dont need slicks with stock or close to stock power anyway. Id just run drag radials if I was under 200whp.

I disagree. improper set up suspension and too much traction breaks axles. its the quick jolt of the power and the tired actually hooking up waaayyy too hard breaks them . Same thing on drag radials. i broke a set on radials the other week. was the 1st time i got traction off the line ever. lol
safest bet to do is launch high and work your way down for the perfect launch on slicks without breaking things. i know people who have ran 550+whp on 25inch slicks on stock axles

I was implying the same. with slicks, you have traction. with high power, and slicks (traction), axle goes snap. yes it can be done with drag radials. it can be done with street tires. add motor mounts, and that puts even more shock on the axles. suspension setup also plays a part. the list goes on and on, fact is that there are many variables involved.
key is . . . . IF YOU GET TRACTION. thats why i will always suggest to drop the clutch at a higher RPM to slide the car off the line . i rather spin a little than hook too hard and break or hook hard and bog like hell. there is a deffinate technique thats for sure.

I can attest to the hook hard and break stuff format. I know squat about drag and was launching the car at the strip at around 4500rpm, basically dumping the clutch with the barest hint of feathering.
At rt66 in Joliet, IL... i finally hooked too well. I hooked up and SNAP, just sat there. Found the culprit later, axle sheared in half before the outer CV joint.
If I ever go back for better times, I'll be launching high and sliding off the line instead of hooking. I was pulling down to 2.1 60fts though
poor es100s
I was on street tires.... a well prepped track is an amazing thing.

you gotta find the happy medium. it depends very much on your set up. dumping the clutch and spinning the tires off the line with a stock ITR and your 60fts are gonna be like 2.5 and probably high 14s at best, more likely low 15s. so many factors involved. practice makes perfect. unfortunately practice = breaking stuff = $$$
