Default A few issues to work out...

My new engine has about 250 mi accumulated on it, normal street driving, with proper break-in procedure. It has not been tuned yet. I have noticed from the start-up that it runs rich, although the fuel, ignition and ECM remains stock. Originally i have suspected the cam to be culprit. as it is giving less idle vacuum. recently my O2 sensor has been tripping the ECM to code 1, which leads me to believe that the O2 sensor is the cause of the rich condition. the question is, what could have caused the failure of the 02 sensor? is it the usual suspects, anti-cease on the sensor, physical damage during the install, or perhaps assembly lube burning off? or could it be the toluene in the gas, as i need about 1-2 gallons of it per fill-up? or is it something with the MAP sensor? i would like to take care of it ASAP, as it smokes at start-up with unburnt gas and my idle is rather erratic, partly due to the cam.
another question is how to use the GE cam gear. i need to retard cam timing as the head is milled, which is also could be the reason of the idle and rich condition problem.
any ideas, thoughts, etc.?

what octane rating are you "assumed" to be at?

i dont know your setup but im going to assume you need the toluene to stop detonation

you need to remember that the more toluene you use the more temperature effects it (how much gets burned)
i calculated how much to use in my hatch with 93oct(yeah east coast) and 1 gallon is enough to boost be close to 96 oct but anything over 1.75 gallons would leave unburnt fuel

as you know running rich will clog the o2 sensor and after your sensor goes bad it adds more fuel no matter what condition your engine is running

first thing empty your tank, fill up with pump gas, and change your 02, then see how your car runs

then recalculate your toluene level and get it tuned

great answer!
My CR is at an estimate of about 12:1, i had put enough toluene (about 1 gallon, plus two gallons of 101) on about 4 gallons of 91 RON fuel to quench the detonation at higher RPMs. All symptoms indicate that i blew my O2 sensor with it. the rich condition is getting worse, which suggests that the sensor became "lazy". i will really need to tune the beast in order to take care of detonation rather then dump high octane fuel on it.
i suspect i have about 100 octane in the tank right now

even with cali's shitty 91oct i doubt you need toluene or even 101, you need to get it tuned

i have to try and find the site with the toluene equations again its been a while
but even 1gal toluene to 6gal of 91 is over kill not to mention the 101 you had i there

you should have just retarded your timing until you got to a dyno

i agree, i followed this link's instructions originally, but that still gave me detonation at more than half throttle, so i compensated
http://www.vtr.org/maintain/gasoline-octane.html

That's on a D16 BTW, which does not deal with high compression as well say a DOHC engine does, due to chamber design.
at least that was my reasoning for using so much additive in the gas

hey man you dont need to break in your motor hundred to thousand of miles..all you need to do is take to get tune and your set..becuase you dont wanna detonate your motor leaning out... get your ecu tuned with your motor..thats what i did..no problems....

******* moron

you show me a built high compression motor, tuned or not, with less than 1000 miles on it and/or not broken in properly, and I'll show you how much oil I can burn at 8000 rpm!

STFU! Treat you own motors like **** if you want, but don't suggest dumb *** ****.

EDIT: Sorry to be such an ***. But the point is, why take time and effort and money to build a good motor and then not be safe with it?

drussell4801<--------

you probably dont know your motors.
make you should go find out how to break in motor..

reread this and think hard about why i said what i said.

just being safe around here.

when you say things, try to be a little clearer, and try to realize that you're usually talking to a bunch of idiots.

actually earl said to put it on a dyno and then go have fun with it that is how i interrupted his break in precedure...do a search.. I broke my motor in this week though revving it from 2 - 6k then 2 -7k i havent took it to 8k yet...
