Tach wiring question

Tach wiring question
I need to tap into the tach pulse and the Helms shows a blue wire coming from the ECU to the tach signal box. Do I need that blue wire or one of the wires from the tach signal box running to the actual gauge assembly?

After some playing around last night...
that blue that runs into the connector that plugs into the back of the gauge assembly is no good for a proper tach signal.
