Default 94 D16 compression test w/140K

Decided to do a compression test on my 94 EX. It has 140k on it and it runs well, doesn't burn any oil either. I was expecting either low numbers across the board or one or two cylinders to be lower than the rest. So I said what the hell. I may be keeping this motor for a while to boost it or swap a different motor in, but nevertheless wanted to see how she is.

Started with the car being warm, removed the ecu fuse and removed all the plugs. I had one of my buddies watch the gauge while I held the gas down and cranked her four times for each cylinder. I pulled 160 +- two to three psi across the board. I was pretty happy with the results. Now only if I could sell the WRX and get the money to start my project.

How does these numbers sound? Thanks for lookin!
Jon

Pretty much she is ready for boost. Wasn't 94 the year the d16 came with forged pistons

my z6 gave me exactly 210 across all 4. now granted this is a little on the high side, and i cranked my motor over 6 or 7 times. 160 for 4 cranks while being very consistent has BOOST ME!!! written all over it

With that many miles, you should be happy.

This is a fully built Z6. I about had a heart attack. We think the numbers are so high because at the time of the test it had oil in the top of the cylinders (<8 miles) because nothing had seated yet. Still thought I would share.

In order from #1-#4. Also, Number 1 read like the others on a second try. We did it again since the number was lower but it got better (270)

What are good numbers to live by? A good range of numbers that tells you that everything is pretty top knotch in your motor?

The range between the numbers is more important. Normally no more than 20% between cylinders.

Yea if I cranked it more than 4 times, it shot up. I tried 5 times and it shot up to 175, so i am sure if I cranked it 6 or 7 times I would have seen close to your numbers. oh well, I have always heard there is no need to crank it over 4 times. So yea now I have to decide if im gonna boost up to 10 psi stock block tuned or build up the bottom end and go up to maybe 13 psi tuned. I think I will be very happy with 10 psi tuned.

I was going to go with a swap but having a motor in this good of condition, I don't want to give this motor away. I don't see the point in buying a B18c or H22 swap if I can boost a healthy D series motor. If it was in poor condition, then I would definitely consider getting a swap. Any other opinions would be greatly appreciated, good or bad. Thanks

Sell the WRX to start the project?? Why not sell the civic and put a little cash into a reliable 4 wheel drive 4 door boosted car? I mean I love hondas as much as the next guy here but I think the WRX would be REAL fun with 2-3k put into it. just my .02 but good luck with the turbo!!!

I don't think 2-3k would be enough to do jack to a WRX lol

while we're on the subject of compression is it ok if the reading on the gauge drops after cranking the motor or should it hold?

conserning the hold of pressure after the stoke has been cycled is useless info.

what you want to know is what happen at the time of stroke. after that is history. besides, if you had a leak, it would be your gauge's.. not the engine. (valves opeing)

if you've ever wondered how compresion testers work.. imagine a tire. it has a valve stem. air only goes in, doens't come out. so imagine using that concept backwards, and putting a line, and a gauge on the end of it? its the same thing, air only goes in (compresson) and nothing comes back. thats all you want to know.

They say 110-130 is rebuild time (stock motor/compression ratio), but it is (like others said) more about the range.

We did a compression test on my friends Real street motor (V8, all motor). 13.1 is nothing.

Explain, besides the miles. Why would it be bad?

so if this is true, why do so many people drop 350+ bucks on some forged pistons??? are they just forged better?(no clue if that is possible) or is it so you can decide on what comp. you want? Can they handle as much boost as main brand forged pistons???with some nice rods too I mean...
