S2K start button in my Si

Hey guys, I don't post that often, but I thought this may be worth you guys' time. I've had this S2K button on my shelf for about a year now and couldn't decide if I wanted to try and install it or not. I've seen it put into a Miata and a Mitsubishi and then I saw a guy put it into the lighter spot in his RSX. I hadn't run across a civic with a clean install yet so I was kind of discouraged. But this past weekend I decided to spend the day brainstorming about the location, its all about the location. I thought that the Hazard switch would be a great place, though the Bezel on the S2k button was about a quarter inch to large in diameter to fit. So I began thinking about boring out the hole and making it fit, but then you run into all kinds of mounting issues not to mention getting the cut edge of the hole to look halfway decent from the cabin side of the dash. Whats more, the surface is at an angle, so the button would have to be at an angle and I wasn't sure about clearance behind the dash panel. So after lots of thought, I decided to pull out the dash panel and just see what was going on behind it. Long story short, when you pull out the Hazard light switch there is plenty of room for the start button barrel. One problem down, a few to go, so I started looking at diameters of the new hole and the button and decided to measure the diameter of the actual start button, not the bezel, just the Red button. It came out to around 24mm give or take. Then I measured the hole left by the hazard switch and it came to about 26mm. Well damn, thats about as perfect as you can get. So now the issue is that the bezel has to come off of the start button. I measured carefully and made sure not to cut too far back on the start button as to damage the track in which the button slides, and took a hacksaw and started slowly cutting around the button, and it came out like this...

.... after cutting I had to use an exacto knife to trim resulting plastic that was pushed behind the edge of the red button, once it was cleaned up, the button operated perfectly. Now for the test fit...

... Man.. it fits really well, like it was ment for that spot! just the right depth, little lip at the top, couldn't ask for it better. So now the issue of mounting. The hazard switch was held in by 2 screws so I just had to use them, they're right there, and I'm not pulling out the appoxy. So I dug around in garage and found some decent hardware. 2 metal brackets probably for picture hanging and 1 of those round screw clamps....

... After some test fitting I tightened everything down.

... I was careful not to tighten the clam down too tightly, because too much will cause the button to stick. But just try it until the button sticks, then back it off some.
After everything is back together, I think it turned out better than expected when I started pulling everything apart, heh... its nice when it works out that way.
As for the wiring, I found a few diagrams online and heard one suggestion that works well I think, the plug that goes into the back of a PC floppy drive, will fit nicely into the back of the S2K button, utilizing 4 of the 5 pins, and only 3 of which are used in the install. I pre wired it and fed the wires through to under the dash. Iv'e got my Relay all wired up, now I just have to get a wiring diagram of the Ignition barrel and I'll be all finished.... man, its such a tease having that nice button there and not being able to use it! Soon though soon. Well, I hope you find it informative and maybe convince a few of you to actually install that thing now, seeing as its not as hard as one once thought.

Pushing the button just takes the place of that 3rd position with the key that actually starts the engine. You put the key in Pos. II and then push the button. In most cases I think, that 3rd position of the key is disabled when the button is wired in place.
looks pretty clean... but i may suggest you add something to the mounting so that the entire button assembly doesnt get pushed back, something that supports the back of the pust start button assembly.
Yeah, I figure... you still pretty much need the key to for the button to work and if someone wants the car, they're gonna get it reguardless of the button or not.
I thought about that, but after much test "pushing" I determined that its not going anywhere. But I guess we'll find out one day, when I push, and it falls in behind the dash.

Looks like the button could still recieve some play, probably would be smart to bend those jig rigged screw brackets around the tightening bracket.
