Questions about engine pinging...
My B18C5 is making a rattling/tapping noise (its not too loud like engine knocking) when I press the gas and maintain present gear (not when downshifting or upshifting); especially when going uphill. Almost sounds like the engine is going to stall. I have three questions involving engine pinging:
1)What is it? From what I hear, its the slapping sound of the connecting rod and crank journal when there's too much play.
2)What causes it? Improper spark plugs? Hard driving?
3)How can it be fixed/resolved.

Yeah I would have to agree! You might want to have a mechanic look at it before you start it again.
without seeing it or hearing it I could not say what wrong.

1) Is this with the stock header or an aftermarket one? Aftermarket headers resonate from the exhaust pulses in the engine at a certain rpm usu 3500 or so.
2) pinging is caused by a number of things usually inadequate octane
3) depends

Update: My ITR is second hand and the pinging has been present since I've had the car. Right now I am using 91 Octane Chevron Supreme, the plugs are the OEM NGK PFR6G-11. I've never taken it past redline myself but I cannot speak for the previous owner...from the looks of it he drove the car pretty hard. Besides the noise the car runs OK. It stalls after reving the engine for a little while (ie. during a collent flush)...but I thought that may be attributed to a Aftermarket lightweight FW becuase rpms drop faster. It sounds like this is some serius ****. Is there anything I specifically should test for? What could be my problem? Also, the sound was there before I did a valve adjust. The valve adjust did make my cold morning startups a bit noisy though (I'm guessing the valving train). Im using a stock, or what I thought was stock--looks like there is an LS header on my car--exhaust manifold and the TB is def. not an ITR. The intake arm side bore measures 58mm and not 66mm.

Just replaced timing belt, tensioner and water pump and then timed the engine and did a valve adjust. Engine is still making the noise. Hard to notice both inside the car and outside. Have to be listening for it.
I replaced sparkplugs, distrib. cap, rotor, and wires. Are you referring to the coil or something? Thanks for the input though. Can someone specify what part of the ignition system?

anytime your engine is making noise, quite driving it!!!

I dont have a choice. The ITR is my daily driver. The noise doesn't sound too bad, just annoying. F$@k, if the engine blows....well....the engine blows, and I'll be on the market for another B18C5. I don't really have a choice. My preference would be to fix the engine I have and if it is in fact pinging, find out what might be causing it. Any more suggestions???

My friends' celica just blew his engine at the track because of that.
Could it possible be your valve needs adjusting?

For some reason I can't reply to the next post. Ill do it here. I already adjusted valves. The noise hasn't changed in rhythem or volume. I guess you guys are right, the only thing to do is to see the mechanic. F@$k, 120$ inspection fee...here I come.
Thanks for your input guys!

Well if you did all the mainentce work already then all a mechanic is going to tell you is that the noise is internal and you need a rebuild....If you have done everything that you can for now just ride it and see what happens. Maybe try running a compression test to see where you are at. Perhaps use some fuel additives to clean up the system.
