So i saw a few people here used some sort of grill instead of an filter for the turbo. So i decided to do the same, but im not too sure if it safe to do so... it give me a lot of room in the engine bay and i like that. can the turbo be damaged my dust or whatever, water...???

 

get some window screen, the thick kind... and get a clamp and you should be alright. I doubt anything small enough to get in the screen will hurt the turbo.

I did exactly the same thing. It's like $3 for a whole roll. I've had no problems also.

 

just make shure its not the other screen ( non metal ) it will melt, i run a screen no probs

 

After i put the screen on or whatever it called, and i drive once i hit boost a little bit. It make a loud sound of sucking in air which with the pipe and air filter never made. is this normal?

 

yup its just louder because its open and more air is being pulled in,

 

I love that sound

 

It would probably be better to run a filter if you can fit it.

 

 

So far it seems like 2 people are running this kind of mesh filter. I don't know if i can trust this yet. Opinions anyone? It's true that something small enough to go through the mesh filter won't damage the turbo, but over time I think it will. Would you want dust and other things going into your intake and sticking to your intake valves? Or depostiting carbon on the cylinder walls over time? I might be totally wrong but if no one can prove me wrong I'm pretty sure I'm right otherwise what would be the use of an airfilter ??

 

I run a screen because I can't get a normal filter in place. No problems so far. I don't drive down dirt roads or anything either though.

 

Would you put a piece of screen over your throttle body on your NA car?

I agree, I run with a filter, its good peace of mind. If you have the room to run a short pipe with a filter at the end, I would do that. Running for a screen is asking for trouble I think, better safe than sorry.

Yeah i agree with all that agree with this Plus **** always happens. If not now then one day.

me too, and I push 20 lbs daily...I love that sound, and the filter just kills it...

i would never ever run a NA or turbo engine without a filter

all that dust and crap going into the engine is just asking for trouble

all that dust and particles acumulate inside the engine cylinders... when they acumulate they are going to act as a friction element, (sandpaper type) and can cause wear, scratches, and damage to the sensitive internals of the engine... prob causing to get the cylinder walls scratched, rings not seating properly, and contamination...
wich will lead to oil concumption, maybe compressinon lost, power decrease and expensive damage

stop being cheap people...... find a way to get a real filter!!!

yes, ANY amount of dust no matter how small will reduce the life of your turbo/motor

 

the screen makes my turbo spool slow...but then again i got a 2 inch inlet. it also gets the compressor really dirty because its sucking in exhaulst from the wastegate dump.

i beleive is spools slow due to nasty intake air u gettting

the CO2, and **** being let out, really kills the performance of the engine...... so if u are breathing that nasty crap, i would realllyyyyyyy invest getting it routed somewhere else.......

 

Man K&N makes a small filter and it's like $27 from Jegs. It's a 2.5" inlet and it's only 4inches long and like 3 inch diameter. Plenty small enough to go on a turbo or at th end of a pipe. Think if it like this. All that dust and sand crap, that does go by that screen cause all it is for is to stop bugs, is eating up your blades. When the war in Iraq was going on the Apache choppers found a valuable tool in prolonging the blade life. They put a heay duty tape on the leading edge. Cause the sand just acted like sandpaper and ate them up. Thats the same thing happenning to your turbo w/o a filter. The blades are just slowly getting smaller and smaller. Run a filter, quit being cheap.

So what you're saying is...we should all put duct tape on the leading edge of our compressor blades! Score, I'm going to go do that right now...brb

what about the people that seriously don't have enough room. I'm not going to spend almost a grand on parts just to move my compressor housing around so that i can put a filter on
