Damn UPS Man!
So I order a DC JDM 4-1 Header for the GSR and what do I see when I open it?
A small quarter size dent in the primary near the flange. Will this impact performance? I figure by the time I ship this back and get a new one, it will not only be two weeks later, but it will also probably cost me extra money! Arghhh!
Should I just keep it?

Hey that sucks man I ordered a set of JIC FLTA2's and the bottoms of the rear stuts were bent but thats really no big deal nothing a hammer won't fix but then just 2 days ago I odered some tires from Vulcan and lets say they were not in the best shape when I got them. If you didn't get insurance the only thing you can do is take it up with the shipper.
That also shouldn't cause too may troubles with performance but it will be an eye soar for all to see. Talk to the company you ordered them from.

If that's the only damage incurred by UPS during shipping, than consider yourself lucky. Most of the time, they manage to bent and mangle the unimaginable...
Depending on how much you've lowered your car, that ain't the worst that you'll see. Unfortunately, the 4-1 drops lower under the car until after it passes the oil pan. Mine was beat to hell from speed bumps and such, resulting in dents on the underside of two of the collector pipes that were approximately 1/2" deep depressions. I never really noticed a loss of power or anything. Definitely way better than the stock, iron manifold I just put back on.

Yes indeed, I know a few who work/worked in the shipping buis and its sad but true as soon as you drop your package off ,that box will most likely be thrown, crushed and god forbid you write fragile on it....thats just asking for "special" care.

Maybe this will make you feel better. The bottom of my old DC4-1 was smashed to hell but it felt alot better than my stock (b18c5) manifold.

Yep, also avoid Fedex ground. It's a company that Fedex bought out. They're worse than Fedex

i actually work in the receiving department (i know... low paying college job
) and the ups guy comes in here and usually just chucks boxes on the ground like its nothing. we frequently see boxes that a ripped, smashed, and basically beat to hell. ups guy doesnt give a rats ***, of course. so if they treat boxes like RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE PEOPLE THAT THEY'RE BEING DELIVERED TO, i can only imagine the beating they get at the sorting facilities. and the bumby-*** rides on the trucks, with many other boxes stacked on top.
and fyi, boxes from fedex usually arrive in a similar manner. the one shipping company that usually gets boxes here in the least beat-up shape is actually usps. they may be slow, but at least they dont beat the crap out of your stuff.
a caveat to all this is that proper packaging will usually withstand all that abuse. it begins with the box. shitty boxes wont hold up to any sort of abuse. next is the packing. if the item being shipped is surrounded on all sides with some sort of firm padding (styrofoam or bubble wrap) that is at least a couple inches thick, you are pretty much gauranteed the item arriving in the shape it was sent.

exactly right.since there's nothing you can do to prevent the improper handling, the only way to avoid damage is to package to prevent it.if you package something to just withstand a ride cross country on a truck,it will most likely get mangled.if you package it to withstand getting stepped on,thrown, etc, then it should survive those things.forget about insurance-i've had claims on two separate occasions(one for TWO brand new C/F hoods i received that were broken in half).even though in both cases the packages met their criteria for boxing and padding, the claims took forever and never were paid.best thing to do is just overpack the item.it may cost more money for materials and take more time, but it is worth it.
as far as receiving a damaged item,it wouldn't hurt to call the shipper and seller.maybe one will be willing to help you,but don't count on it.
