Default Quiet(er) aftermarket muffler for '98 Accord 2.3L

I recently purchased a 1998 Accord Coupe with the 2.3L engine. Although this is my everyday car, I'm working on increasing overall HP and torque. I want to replace the stock muffler with one that provides more flow but does NOT result in too much noise. Some people have told me to go with a Flowmaster or Magnaflow, but don't really have any experience with either. If anyone has some helpful advice, I'd be much appreciated.

Also, I was advised I would be better off also replacing the intermediate pipe instead of having it bottle-neck at the muffler. Any thoughts on this?

That's an excellent suggestion, but I neglected to mention that I'm still in college and don't have a great job yet. When I graduate and can afford great parts, I'll definetely go with apexi.

I guess my simple question is, which muffler would make me sound like less of an *** but still give some increased flow (and cost less than $200)? Dynomax, Flowmaster, Magnaflow, Gibson, etc...

Won't the silencer negate the flow of the muffler? Or is the drop not too significant?

according to SCC's dyno test on the mini cooper, full SS quality catback with silencer have fewer hp and tq than stock unit.

I was afraid of that. I think I'll take ash.zero's advice and just save my money for a higher quality exhaust system instead of blowing it on barely adequate and overly obnoxious muffler. Besides, there's a lot of other things I can do with this car in the mean time.

I know this is going to be vague....

I was at a local cruise in two weeks ago and noticed a dual tipped muffler under a fairly stock looking 98 LX sedan. I asked the driver if he would mind starting the car and taching it up a couple of times so that I could hear it. To my surprise it sounded nice. It gave off a very low rumble as opposed to an obnoxious sound. I followed up with a question about where he got it and, here is the vague part, he said he got it off of Ebay for less than $50.00. Sadly he couldn't remember the name of the seller.

It was a stock looking oval can shape with a JDM-ish dual tip that came out straight for roughly two or three inches then angled upwards at about a 30 degree angle. Each tip had a small hole machined in the bottom for water to drain out.

If you see something similar it might be worth asking the seller some questions.

I've actually seen that on eBay, or something very close to it. If someone can verify that this is it, 50 bucks is nothing to spend if even for a slight increase in flow. Even if it's not some big name brnad, I know that's not always important when it comes to car parts. I've learned that lesson when dealing with CAI's. A cheap one with a good K&N filter is as good as a first generation AEM. Not sure about the V2 though....

Yeah, I think I'm going to save my pennies for an apexi ws. I really don't want to be that guy. Especially after years of ripping into them.

However, if any of you DO want to be that guy, I found this little beauty for sale on eBay while searching for exhaust systems...

HAHAHA, thats funny. Never seen that before. Hope I don't ever see it around here. It's kinda sad that people that buy it would actually think we would think it was turbo charged. I mean come on, a front engine car that sounds like it has a turbo in the back. that is funny though

edit:
just to clarify, I wasn't making fun of you Yodzilla. Good choice in waiting until you can buy the good system. I love my WS2 on my Civic.

It's definetely not worth getting your *** beat after you show off your "hot ride" to the tuners that hang out in the Burger King parking lot.

Seriously, who would you impress with this crap? I almost want to buy another old CRXsi and add one of these things, a wooden spoiler, and a cardboard body kit. I will rule the streets...

yeah, but it still comes down to it's your car and money so do what you want. Some people like the body kits and wings while other prefer to have that stock look with more motor and suspension work. I say do whatever makes you happy.

APEXi WS or Greddy EVO. DC Sports is another quiet exhaust.

Trust me. I took no offense at all with that post. Even if I did figure out that I was in some way insulted, I've got very thick skin...

My personal style is minor body modification so that it doesn't look stock, but it still looks stylish and personalized. As far as the engine goes, I think more power is great, but being too loud and drawing too much attention, be it either good or bad, just isn't me. I'm already scowering the internet for the best deals on an A'Pexi WS exhaust system. Anybody have any recommended dealers?

BTW Apex WS Exhaust Utilize Chambered muffler while Greddy evo and SP2 use straight through design.....something to consider....

IMO the HKS Drager is a very quiet catback system. Either get one of those or go with the A'PEXi WS. Both companies make high quality parts.

I also agree with Beach Accord...don't just get a new muffler, save up and get yourself a nice catback system. You won't regret it.

I had to buy my WS2 in short notice so I didn't have to much time to search that much. Just searched the sites that I could think of and did a little searching for sites that people posted on H-T. The cheapest one I found was at http://www.OverBoost.com/obs There was one other place that was slightly cheaper but shipping was more, sorry can't think of the site though.

Thanks for the tip about the HKS system. I'll have to look into that some more. If it provides as much power as the Apexi, and isn't too loud, it looks to be a good, cheaper alternative.

I think the APEXi WS2 is cheaper than the HKS Dragger system unless your only going to buy the rear section of the HKS Dragger.

Yeah, you're right. The first page I went to just had the rear section and didn't specify. Man, I'd be pissed off if I bought that. Of course, the site looked pretty questionable so I probably wouldn't have gotten it there anyway.

I think my best bet is to keep checking eBay and elsewhere. The lowest I've found the Apexi for is about 380 plus shipping.

Just as a side question, is the only difference between the Apexi WS and the WS-2 the design of the muffler tip?
