Default Suggestions for engine/tranny swap?

Hi, I have a 1990 2 door hatch base model. I don't much of anything about Honda motors, but I need to learn. The tranny is a 4 speed. The current engine is burning quite a bit of oil, so I would like to replace both the engine with a stronger one, and a 5 speed tranny. This car is a daily driver so I don't want to get too carried away, but its current configeration is not working for me. I really like the style of this car and would like to keep it for a long time.

Thanks for your help,

Craig

get a b16 swap with a cable tranny it isnt the most expensive and it is a good motor. u can get one for maybe as cheap as $3000 with tranny. but otherwise just get a non vtec motor it will be cheaper. but not as fast. good luck

yeah, b16, when i did my b16 swap, i got the engine, tranny, axles, ecu, shift linkage, stage 2 racing clutch, header, motor mounts, $250 in wiring and it only ran about $2700...that was also including everything else that i needed to get it running right(Thermostat etc..)
