EK civic hatch, car setup questions
I have been tracking quite a bit lately and think it is time i start to focus on car setup.
I am running full coilovers and a B series under the hood...just so you have an idea of my setup.
I am looking for lapping setups for camber and toe on all 4 corners.
Right now my car is darting around as soon as i touch the wheel, it kinda feels like toe out is causing this problem. my mid corner is very stable and solid, but on exit I am pushing quite a lot. That will probably be improved by adding an LSD but i am currently a little money limited.
Some setup info would be great and if you can support your setup a little by mentioning why you made a change and how it improved things.
Thanks in advance
Ian

1/8" total toe out front
0 toe rear
Car is darty, but turns in better and is more stable under braking - probably because the toe was out of whack in the rear before (i.e. not even).

ok thanks,
Putting toe out in the front will make a car darty, and is an excellent setup for corner entry, but what i am looking for is a comprimise between entry and exit.
I am going to try that setup and see what happens. Hopfully it will work for me.
Thanks for the advice.
I am really interested in peoples setup...

FWIW....
1/8" toe out front
1/16" toe in rear
-2.8 front camber
-1.8 rear camber
as much positive front caster as possible.
This was a 99 "EK" (EM1 Si) with KYB AGX's set 2/8 with GC stock rates F and 400R with ITR rear bar and corner weighted with perfect 50.0 x-weights.
It took me a LOT of tinkering and playing with settings to find something comfortable for me, but this complemented my driving style. I don't Auto-X either so not sure what your plans are.

Well i don't auto-x myself, i am a full on track guy and attend lapping days about once every week.
I am currently building up to enter the One Lap of America in the spring so need as much track experience as possible.
I think all the setup information is great, the only concern i have with going toe out in the front is that that is more of an auto-x setup. When tracking you want to be able to use little steering input when setting up for a corner, when you have to-out the car is darty casueing the car to be unstable when setting up your entry and especialy when trying to brake at the same time.
I am going to do my best to try these different setups and see how they react.
Thanks for all the input

Maybe you didn't read my post clearly enough. I said I DON'T auto-x. While some people think that having toe out causes the car to be a little unsettling when approaching a turn or "darty", I think you just have to get use to it. I like this set-up a lot more then I did with no toe. A lot of road racer's use a similar set-up as well.

Ian,
We race our EK in WCHC, and we basically use 1/16 front toe out, 0 toe in the rear.
Camber changes with the track. But an average would be something like 3 degrees neg front and 1.5-2.5 degrees neg in the back.
TEIN N1 on Toyo-RA1's.
BTW- Did you change your steering rack? We swapped ours to a 99-00 Si, with a home made breather... the DX rack is too numb for me.
Hope this helps.

What are your spring rates? ride height? swaybars? tires?
Stiffer suspensions and race tires will want a bit more negative camber, softer suspensions and performance tires won't need as much. The correct way is to take tire temps after a hot lap, but most of us just go with what feels right.
On the track, I like a little bit of toe out in the front like 1/16 total, 0 in the rear. +/- -3 front and -2 rear.

Current suspension setup,
running tein RE's
14k front 10k rear
front upper and lower tower bar, no sway bars at the moment,
i am currently back and forth with Falken azenis and toyo RA1, depending on how far away the track is and other factors
i am running a stock CX rack with no power steering...has more feel that way
current camber is about -2 front -2 rear
my tire pressurs very depending on track temperature and how abrasive the track is...the lowest i usualy run is about 18psi and at some tracks when i was on very long runs and wanted to sacrifice grip in order to reduce the amount of scrub i run up to 40 psi (all cold numbers)
This is some great info, i appreciate all you suggestions and advice

Right now my car is darting around as soon as i touch the wheel, it kinda feels like toe out is causing this problem. my mid corner is very stable and solid, but on exit I am pushing quite a lot. That will probably be improved by adding an LSD but i am currently a little money limited.

I am on the same suspension as you but with the springs swapped front to back, 10kg front, 14kg rear. I also run a Comptech 22mm rear bar and a EX 22mm front bar. I feel comfortable with this setup but I still feel a little bit of understeer. I'm thinking of going with a larger rear bar and up the rates to 14kg front and 20kg rear (with a revalve).
I am also using the CX manual rack..
The darting does sound like a toe out issues...
The LSD will help a bit but you will still suffer from a good amount of understeer.
To start out I would try a bit more negative camber up front, like -2.5 and maybe lessen the rear to about -1.5. I would also suggest a rear sway setup.
Thanks to a suggestion from a fellow racer, Toyo RA1's don't seem to like high pressures. I like the Toyo's in the mid 30's, hot. He like low 30's, hot.
