Default sawed off shifter

hey, any of you guys have a sawed off shifter for your 5 speed? I installed a short shifter adapter, now that the throw is reduced I kinda want my stick to be shorter too. anyone had experience chopping off the shifter and knows how to do it good, so I can still reattach the shift **** afterwards? Thanks

how much did it set you back? are the shifts noticeably smoother? how short does the gate become?

i haven't really measured it, but it is definitely smoother to shift... i'd say shorten throw by 1/4 to 1/3? and it doesn't feel as soft when it sits in gear too.

yeah, i sawed off about an inch off of my shifter... however, be warned that if you do so, then you will no longer have the threads to screw a shift **** on...

My fake Filipino Momo shift **** isn't threaded, it's got 3 alan screws at the bottom that you tighten up agaist the gear stick.

Did you remove or replace the bushings on the shifter?

ok, here is what you do... you saw it off in 2 places... saw off the threads and how low you want it, and you weld the threads back on. that is if you need the threads. for me, I dont need them b/c I have a MOMO shift ****. if you go too low, your **** wont fit, so just becareful. I took off about 1 1/2 inches.

the reason you would need a different **** is because with the Momo *****, it has 3 screws that hold it in place, and doesn't use the threads.

also... like I said, becareful of where you cut your shifter. if you go too low, the shifter gets fatter, and the **** wont fit.

and unfortunately, the threads to the three screws sometimes get stripped... arg, my Momo never stays on tight... i have to retighten it over and over again...

try removing your bushings on the mounting plate for the shifter, it should drop it about an inch. There are bushings on the top of the plate and on the bottom. This should also stiffen the shifter up a little.
If you do cut it you can take it to a machine shop and have them use a tap and die set to put new threads on the stick. Should take them about 10-15 minutes to do.

Thank you! I was sitting here wonering why no one suggested just running a die over it.

depends on how low of a cut do you want. if you have a B n m then after you in stall it, cut where it starts to angle and then put a shift *** that only has allan
screws on it. you might have to pound it with a mallet. (softly, not to hard or you'll
brake it.)
