Default Speed Restriction...

yO guys wahtsup..

so i was driving back from san jose (to frisco) where i had my orientation for state, n i was going like 110mph on the freeway. i was just curious to see exactly how much more i could take it..(yah i kno, tsk tsk) but newayz.. after i started to accellerate more, all of a sudden the engine starts making sounds, and i can feel my car kind of downshift? (maybe thats not the right word.) n yeah i start to automatically slow down, n i cant go any faster...

ive heard that some cars had this, some kind of speed limit **** where u cant go a certain speed if u have low mileage on the car or whatever. i didnt think it would be on a civic tho. (2004).

just wondering when this speed restriction thing will turn off.. or if i can manually disable it. and is this a feature standard on all cars?

thanks.

oh btw, what exactly is the number that it shuts u down at?

You probably experienced the speed limiter. I'm sure your Civic has one. My '97 EX's P2P regulates top speed to 112 mph.

There are a lot of things to take into consideration before removing the speed limiter. I would advise keeping it there for the time being.

You shouldn't be driving over 110 in an automatic civic...period.

You cant "take it off and put it on" just like that. Do some research first. Then when you get it done let us know what freeway (i could just hope its a freeway/highway you try this one) your on so we could stay off it.

That would be the key for me. If it was manual he most likely would have said it felt like I downshifted.

Heh.... not too fast i can imagine. But, I'm gonna tell ya the speed limiter is in the ECU. It's not something you can physically take on and off. You can check out uberdata and that will change it, but it's not a good idea. Plus, the fact that your all "help me take it off get it outta there i wanna go fast and kill myslef and take someone with me" you could probably easily **** up yer car w/ the tuning software. Read a little be... the truth is out there.

It would take a shitload of work and way too much money to run his engine with Uberdata. It is simply not an option.

hey im not saying help me take it off so i can go kill a **** load of other people as well as myself.. im just saying, id like to kno more about it, and yes its my decision to want to take it off. - but im not gona be breaking krzy *** speeds like that in the middle of rush hour. im thinking more like.. wen i have to drive 100 mile straights to other cities at like 4am. id be nice if i didnt have something restricting me from going the speed that i want to.

btw.. wahts the point of tuning the **** out of ur car, if u cant even fukin get the results or reach the speed that its supposed to benefit u at. i mean yeah this doesnt apply to every damn situation, but come on.. who WANTS to have a friggin limiter in their car.

the limiter is in the computer....... so, you'd have to hack or swap out the computer to make it go away. beyond that my gsr is limited at 120mph, and i dont plan to remove the limiter until my trap speed is ready to exceed that number. it's been put in place to save your *** from yourself, so leave it there..... besides, how stable do you think your civic is at that kind of speed? i wouldn't want to experience a highway undulation while moving that fast in an unprepared econobox.......

and, at the risk of sounding like some old fart, american highways were designed for moving weapons and evacuating cities in the case of a nulear threat (i swear, watch the history channel)..... they weren't meant to be travelled at 100mph. you have to go to germany for that.

Basically you are going to need to reprogram your ECU or buy a reprogrammed ECU. I know how it is sometimes. There is a right time and a wrong time for every thing. People in Honda-Tech act like they've never driven over 100mph on the streets before, when most cars are daily driven and some people never even seen track time.

i have taken my 95 ex with a stock p28 to 127. And as far as getting the restrictor taken off. You can just go buy one of those 5$ ebay "Performance Racing Chips" or you can take that five bucks and go buy me some Taco Bell

Did you read his first post? He has a 2004 Civic. First, his ECU will not accept an external ROM chip, it uses flash memory. If you are referring to the resistor IAT mods on eBay, they have noting to do with a VSS based speed limiter. He can't "chip" his ECU and Hondata doesn't have a performance flash for it. Unless he wants to spend a few grand he is stuck at 112 right now. Maybe the JDM crowd will have a VTEC controller with VSS recalibration above 180kph (112mph) but that might be a ways off for the newest Civics.

I was attempting to show him that it would be a better idea to buy taco bell then to mess with it.

I agree, take the $5 to taco bell. They have the new big bell value menu. You can get full-on value. And imo it's a better investment than those ebay chips. Remember:

ebay chips =
tortilla chips(especially w/ nacho cheese) =
