Transmission Disassembly Question
Foreword: I have searched.
I have a transmission out of a 95 EX in my shed right now. I am currently attempting to open it up and see if the gears are all torn to hell (the car it came from was totalled after running through the woods, leaving the suspension pushed back 6 inches). I have taken off all of the 12mm bolts and such from around the housing with the oil drain plugs, but something is still holding the thing on there. The only thing left on it is the VSS. Should I remove this or should the housing come off with it still on? Also the housing has started to come off (the seal has been broken) but I just can't get it off more than 1mm. Thanks in advance.

There are quite a few things left on there. I suggest getting a Helms manual if you're trying to tear down a tranny. Also, check up on the thread by BauleyCivic about replacing your input shaft bearing.
You will need to remove 3 small bolts with some ***** and springs in them along with the snap ring under the 32mm bolt on the end of the tranny.
Seriously, before you do this, you either need to read up on that thread by Dusin or get a helms, or probally both. It'll save you a helluva lot of headaches.

Which end of the transmission is this 32mm bolt on? The outside or where the flywheel would be? I have read Bauley's threads about seal replacements. I think I see this snap ring.
The "bolt" which is actually more of a plug is going to be removed with a 1/4 or 1/2 inch drive ratchet. It's on the end of the tranny opposite the flywheel and actually locks around either the mainshaft or countershaft (can't remember, wanna say countershaft). Once you get that out you'll need snapring pliers and some patience to get the whole thing off. It took me and a friend the better part of 10 minutes of messing with it to get it off. Before you get to that point just take everything you see on the tranny out. Label it, mark on the tranny casing if need be where it goes, do what you need to do to get it all back in. The clutch housing and tranny housing should seperate 1/2 inch or so before you even need to get out the snapring pliers and get that though.

Update: I got the housing off and everything looks very good, so I'll just clean it and put it back together and toss it into my car. There is only one problem... when I took the housing off I noticed one of the gears was off. I'm fairly certain that it goes into the hole right next to it with the fork over it, but I'm not sure which end is up and which end is down.

edit2: Also what should I use to seal the transmission back up? HondaBond or sillicone stuff?

thats just the reverse idler gear. Make sure you get it properly installed with the selector fork also.
and use a thin coat of Hondabond around the case. Use new crush washers for the spring and ball seats, and Hondabond on the snap ring plug.
Bench shift the tranny through all gears and spin the main shaft and make sure the change of speed in the diff is proportional

That's odd, I didn't find any bolts with a spring and ball. On the inside area with the input shaft I did find however a bolt with a spring on it. Does that reverse idler gear just go where that hole is in the fork thingy? I put in there but the idler gear was making contact with the really big gear just to the left of the hole in pics 329 and 330.
well, you probably didn't pull the spring and ***** out, which means they got lost somewhere. There should be I believe 3 of them. And the ***** make contact with the indent on the shift forks...
Are they lost somewhere in the transmission? I ask this because I unscrewed everything on the outside and only found the spring next to the input shaft. The only ***** I see in there are the ones in the bearings. I have that reverse idler gear back in place but it just doesn't seem like it goes there.
The reverse idler gear WILL go in the wrong way. Make sure it is in the right way otherwise you won't be able to bolt it all up. The right way is with the hole upwards so that a bolt can go through.

It looks as though the shift detent bolt/spring is internal to the 5th gen Ex (#13, 8) vs external like the 6th gens (#10, 9, 23).

I'm trying to put it back together now, but I can get it to within 2mm of closing and it just stops going. The snap-ring is very close to being on. Oh well round 2 tomorrow.
