Default Poor gas Mileage 03 Accord

Have an appt. with the dealer next week for poor fuel mileage...30mpg highway and 26.5 city. My feeling is that it should be better according to the ratings Honda gives the Accord.(4 cylinder-automatic)
Dealer indicated over the phone that they don't know what they will be able to do....gimme a break!! I'm not much of a mechanic but can't they do some diagnostic checks?
Any help on what I may be able to suggest to the dealer to look for would be appreciated.....they sell them, but aren't what i would call "on top of it" in the service dept.

all depends on the way the driver drives, how much crap is in the car, the areas you drive in, and well, that really isnt HORRIBLE gas mileage. at the dealership i work at (which is a ford dealership, but hell, same thing) we dont even look at cars for "poor gas mileage" problems within the factory warrenty... sometimes it could be an O2 sensor, but that would also cause other problems. but its just not something that car companies care to look at because there are WAY too many factors involved.

k-24 with an automatic will get 30mpg if you drive all day on the interstate. but even then like FatJoe said it depends on to many variables.

I don't consider 30 hiway to be poor, that's about what I get running 60-80 or so, with some local mix, on my 03 LX 2.4 auto sedan. That also includes some wfo blasts away from toll booths and squirts to avoid skill-impaired drivers. How many miles on your car? Those 24/33 figures are EPA-cycle tests anyway, not Honda's ratings, and may or may not be related to the real world. Your mileage may vary, as they say. I got 32 on today's fill up, I think that's the best I've gotten so far. I have about 12,000 mi. and change oil every 3K. Check tire pressure too. Could be worse, it could be a 75 Caddy.

Check your tire pressure. It can be the second biggest factor (driver being the first).

My Integra gets 37 on the interstate (75 w/ AC on) - 40psi on fronts and 38 on rear.

At 32psi all around (like the book recommends) I get 33 mpg under the same conditions.

By the way - not sure if you've checked it or not, but it will also save you some embarrassment.

Better for me to point it out to you than the dealer.

If you've already checked, kudos to you.

Ryan.

I have no idea why you're complaining about your mileage. The EPA ratings for gasoline mileage are grossly outdated. I don't know the exact details on how they determine the mileage, but I do know that they drive the car that people in the 1970's drove. In this day and age people accelerate more quickly and people also drive at higher speeds in general, which means that almost no one will get the true EPA ratings.

I say that the biggest factor is your driving habits. There's been times when I've gotten 450 miles per tank, and there have also been times where I got 270 miles per tank.

I have an 03 4dr ex-l and get about the same mileage ad you do. We do not see many complaints about gas mileage on the new Accords at my dealer. As for diagnosing there is not much we can do. There is no computer or diagnostic device the dealer uses to determine gas mileage, it depends alot on the driving conditions. At times my mileage has gone down to 21mpg due to "spirited driving".
The way the dealer will diagnose it will be by filling the tank drive it approx 30 to 40 miles, refill and calculate from there.

No BS here...actually watched the mechanic connect the computer to the car(inside).....only one(yellow) code came up on the screen...MAP sensor....it indicated that it should be reading between 28-41...was only hitting 23....whatever all that means as I'm no mechanic. Regardless, it was the MAP sensor....new one installed next Tuesday.

I still say cough cough bullshit. First off you're a whiny little girl because 26.5 is awesome in the city. Second those guys can make the thing say anything they want, they're paid con-artist. Was the car even running when he told you it was 23 or whatever? You're presenting a "problem" and they're solving it for you best they know how aka ripping you off.

Also for whoever posted the 40 psi thing I'll have to try that. I work at a tire shop and am a firm believer of 35 psi all around to max out tread life. But hell if it helps my gas mileage I can afford to go a little higher.

My 03 Accord is a V6 and I can get 30 mpg on highway, but not 26 mpg in the city.

No CEL light showed. FYI
What's with the "cutdowns" on this forum for asking a question? Some unneeded name calling that really is warranted. Those guys wouldn't last long on Corvette forum of which I'm a member as well. For those of you who responded with approximately the same fuel mileage....i feel somewhat better. Nevertheless, it is a warranty item, so I'm not "getting ripped off" and I trust the one and only Honda dealer mechanic that touches my ride.

Same...will let you know after Tuesday when the new part goes in....perhaps it won't make a difference, yet they indicated with the readings fuel consumption would be affected. Thanks for your interest.

Hey let's know if you could improve the gas mileage.

I have a new Accord LX 2004 (4 Cyl, Auto, about 3000 miles on it right now). I am noticing a strange behavior. I have been logging gas mileage right from beginning. The car was filled full tank when it had about 60 miles and started keeping a log of mileage reading and the amount gallons required to fill. After that I filled it every once in a while (couple of times when it had completed about 250-300 miles after the previous fill, and rest of the times when the gas-light came on). The gas mileage has been decreasing consistently -- almost like: 34, 30, 28, 27 and now 25.x !!. My driving include about 30% city road and remaining highways. As far as possibke I avoid applying break to improve gas mileage and has been driving it as if it is a baby. My wife and son will be inside whenever I take this car. I was really thrilled when I got very good gas mileage in the initial days -- but not any more!
