Default Going through starters every week. Help Me please.

I have been going through starters like crazy. One works for like a week and then nothing. If I let the car sit for a few days, it will work again without me actually doing anything to the car, but it will only work for a short time.

When i say the starter goes, i obviously mean it doesn't work anymore. No turning over at all. The gear itself doesn't even pop out of the starter itself to spin the flywheel.

Both Starter bolts are in, so i know it is properly grounded.

The thing I really don't understand is that sometimes if i turn the key and nothing happens, I can hold it there for a second and it will turn over. Car has no problem when I try to pop start it, and runs fine when it is running.

I really am pretty clueless as to why this is happening. I am perfectly willing to accept the fact that i am just getting really unlucky with the rebuilt starters, but the symtoms themselves don't seem right. Either the starter goes or it doesn't, there is no in between in my experience.

Let me know if you can help, any suggestions will do... thanks!

So I figured i would take a look at my Main relay, got under my dash moved some wires around, and for the heck of it tried to start my car. It didn't start, but now the gear is popping out out of the starter itself, where as before nothing would happen...

Another Dead Starter, this will make 4 in less than two weeks!

Are you testing them out of the car? Might be a long shot but it sound like a bad battery, bad battery connection, or the ground. Just a thought...

Each time minus the starter before this one and the one i have now i have been bench testing before i return them... but get this...

I came back inside flipping out, typed above message than sat down and watched the end of Rodney Dangerfield's Back To School, then went back outside to play with the car again... this time it starts!

What the?

Battery or connection... Double check all your connections and make sure you have a good battery w/ plenty of amps

when your car doesnt want to crank over,
-leave the key on the ON position,
-MAKE SURE ITS IN NUETRAL
-pop the hood
-get a piece of wire (speaker wire)whatever, and jump the starter from the St terminal to the positive right next to it.

it shouldnt crank over and start if the starter is bad.

if it does start then your problem lies in the neutral safety switch or the actual ignition switch

thank you for an effective way to check if my starter is bad. apparently the starter is good since it has started the car about ten times over the past hour... i redid battery connections but won't be able to check amps til i can borrow a meter... if battery is good i will attempt ignition switch next... easy job to replace ignition switch?

i have the same problem with my 90 crx, just been too lazy to diagnose the neutral switch and the ignition. i just pop the hood and jump it.
the ignition is pretty easy to swap out though.
