Smog ref question regarding the ECU (Yes I did a search but just want to clear things up)
Here's my situation. I'm swappin a 2000 h22a4 into my 97 Acura CL and I want to get that BAR sticker so I'm stayin OBD2 for now. I heard that the ECU for 97+ engines have immobilizers in them, but 96 did not. 96 is what I want to use.
Do they check the year of the ECU? I read that smog ref thread which really helped, and "B Cruz" said "they check ecu's now at the ref and they ask for a paper from a Honda dealership stating that that is the correct ECU for your motor."
I'd rather not pay a dealership to reprogram a 2000 ECU, but if I have to I will.
Thanks.

YES! They will check the year of the ECU you are using as well as if its a federal or california emissions group ecu.

Yes they are SUPPOSED to check for the year of the ecu and whether it is a california ecu or federal one. However, some referees do not. The one I went to did not check. He just made sure it was a p13 (OBD 1 in my case).
I think your best bet is to source a 96 prelude vtec ecu and try to BAR it with that ecu. If the referee notices, then you will have to go through the dealership route. You can also just try a different referee til you get one that doesn't check the ecu.
Good luck.

Which one did you go to? I'm goin down to UC Riverside for school at the end of the summer, so maybe I might just go to the one you went to.
