i need some tips on primer and sanding
im buying an EG hatch and its only partly primed. I want to reprime it as well as sand it down and get it ready to be painted. what kind of primer and sand paper should i get? ive never done this so any tips would be helpful. thanks
deff. do NOT use rattle can period. If you paint over that it will leave water-spot like marks that wont come off. So the first step is finding out what kind of primer is on now. If its rattle can, sand it off with like 180 or 220. I doubt you need to go ot metal so you want to feather edge all the layer (make the edges of layers, likes chips and stuff, blend together softly) by using like 400 grit. Just sand the whole car with 400. I'm having like a painters block right now but you can go to like wesco or whateve paint supply you go to and pick up a gallon of primer. Are you painting it or someone else? anyways if its you you'll obviously need some sort of air supply, air hose, and paint gun. Just put the primer in the can (i forget if you need to add paint thinner to the primer or not but im sure someone else willl elaborate, same with flex additive and activator and reducer) adjust your air pressure on the gun until its a nice even flow. prime it (dont be affraid, its just primer, if you mess up it can be fixed) then wet sand it with 600. That was all very vague but i can't think right now. You could always call up House of Kolors and ask when theyre putting on their next tutorial. For like 25$ they put on a 2 day (i believe 2 day, maybe just a really long 1 day) workshop (more like a school class) about paints, techniques, procedures, etc. It's really good actually. I went to one of them for my autobody class. You learn alot there if you pay attention. Oh ya, clean the gun right after your done and get the ground damp so the dust/dirt stays down if you arent doing it in a place like a painting booth.
whats rattle can? is there any kind of spray primer i can get? the more i look at the car i think i only need to reprimer the front fender on the passengers side and the roof. i dont have access to a spray gun. i wanna save as much money as i can which is why i wanna do the prep work myself

i meant rattle can as in spray primer (aresole can). Only 1 company makes a paint compatable fizz can (rattle can, spray primer, aresole can) which is Du Pont but its pretty expensive. We used it for small projects in autobody but it's probably cheaper to buy the real stuff by the gallon at a paint supply. As for spray gun, if you arent really stressin about show car quality, they have some at sears from 20-60$ depending on the sized of the gun and carrier
