wheel offsets... searched but still wondering...
could someone possibly explain the theory behind wheel offsets, like what the actual measurement means.
i was looking at ro_ja formula 5 wheels but they only appear to be making 18's that fit the s2000 according to their application guide.. but there is a 17x7 they make with a +42 offset that has the s2000 lug pattern. so if anyone could enlighten me on the possibility of a 17x7 +42 in the front and the next problem is that i dont see them offering a 17x8 for the rears.. they jump up to 18's.
and if anyone could possibly suggest some other forged wheels that are preferably under 500 a piece that'd be great. i was thinking 17x7 front and 17x8 rear, but i am a nOOb to the s2000 world and rely heavily on your help.
thanks

The measurement is how far off from center the rim mounting point is. Think of it this way...you have a 7 inch deep wheel so in the center there would be 3.5 inches on one side and 3.5 on the other. If the mounting point of the wheel (where it meets the wheel bolts) was at this point, I believe the offset would be 0. If this point is closer to the outside of the rim then this offset would be 42mm 45mm on and on. If this is incorrect someone please chime in and correct me, this is how it was explained to me years back and I may have botched it up a bit.
Check out http://www.tirerack.com for good wheel ideas.
Here I even did a search for you: http://www.tirerack.com/upgrad...dClar=
And I even did one for offset for you...enjoy!

i have a wholesale account at tirerack.com, but unfortunately i dont like any wheels they offer for the s2000. and also, i dont understand still either what offsets are correct and which aren't for our applications...
Go talk to someone at a discount tire store. They can call it up on their computer and tell you what offset you will need with each size wheel. They may not have any wheels you are looking for, but they typically have atleast one knowledgeable person that can lead you in the right direction with the offsets.

These are some wheels discount offers in the 17 inch size. Notice in the size it has a "38S" or "42S". Well that 38 or 42 is the offset of the wheel. So a 17 x 7.5 with a 42 or 38mm offset should fit the S2000. My wheels are on page 10 of that search (Team5Zigen Fighters) and they have an offset of 42mm with a width of 7.5 and they fit perfectly. Hoped this helps

interesting, but 7.5" around is far from perfect. you need to keep the staggard wheel setup, even if you are just putting around town. I've heard it several times where an owner cheaps out on rims, gets all four corners the same width so he/she can rotate the tires and save dollars that way. however, it will bite you in the butt when you realize you don't have a balanced car and the back end swings out on you unintentionally.
so to sum it up, if you go out and spend that 150-300 bucks on an x-brace or STB those dollars could be better spent up front by getting the right sized wheels & tires which will actually make a difference in your car's performance.

I know the setup is not perfect, but it fits my street use just fine. I use different size tires to give somewhat of a stagger. The car still perfoms well you just have to remember that the limits have changed a little. I can still take corners at high speeds just have to keep a feel for the rearend. I bought the rims because I love the look and unfortunately they didn't make them in an 8" or I would've gotten them for the rear. Now as far as the track goes...I'll run my stock 16's with some victoracers to get optimal performance.

If you do not want the wheels to rub and you plan on lowering your car, do not get anything with less than a 50mm offset. Wheels that actually "fit" this car are going to be expensive. There are very few manufacturers that make a wheel specifically for the S2000. If it were me, I would stick to the Works or Volks. The Volk CE28N comes in a size specifically made for the S2000. The fronts are 17x7.5 with an offset that is at least +50mm and the rears are 17x9 with a 63mm offset.

so if the wheels are umm hypothetically 18X9.5's but have an offset of over 50mm they won't rub?

no, you need more offset with a wider wheel.
