dash lights dont work any more.
ok ever since i hooked up my autometer tach in my 91 si the lights in the dash stopped working,my light dimmer switch wouldnt work for the light source so i figured that i did not need the little glow ring that goes around my cig lighter.so i spliced into that and used that power for my tach back light,i figured it only came on when the lights were on so it would be ok.well anyways i have checked the fuse thats labeld dash/ac controlls/dome light.well it kinda goes like this.the lights for the ac and heat dont light up anymore neither do the cluster lights.i took a volta meter to the wires runing to the auctual lights inside the gauge cluster and they were getting power just not working.is it possible that i just burnt the lights out?i took them out and they seemed just fine.wtf is going on.its been 2 months and i have no clue.please can some one help.is there a fuse under the hood?
Definately check the fuses. Check under your steering wheel. Right below the Steering colum there is a panel that should say fuses. There are two tabs on that that you have to push in. Push those in and then look on the underside of the pannel for the fuse map. There is also a fusebox under the hood. When you pop the hood look up to the top left corner for the fuse box. I believe that the fuses that you are looking for are under the steering colum though.
yeah i checked under the dash and it is fine.if it was that particular fues the dome light would not work.once when i was dicking around with my stereo i had a live wire touch a ground and it blew out that fuse i replaced it and it was ok.so is there a fuse under the hood that would cause just those particular lights not to work?
negative, if i was in your shoes i would just pull every fuse out one at a time and see if you can find the dud fuse. you would be suprised by doing that and finding a fuse that is blown causing the problem even though the fuse that it should be blown is not. good luck

Your light dimmer may be out as well. If that goes out then you will have no gauge lights. Check to see if the dimmer switch is plugged in , getting +12v, check voltage output of it turned to its brightest setting.
my dash lights don't work either, but at least my control lights light up, as in the climate control lights, they actually come on, but i can't dim them or what not. Clock light doesn't even work properly, it just stays on, won't dim or what not. so i'm not even sure what my problem is either, Phobia if you find out, i'd like to know this answer as well. i checked all my fuses as well.
well what had happend was when i was hooking the tach up it was getting dark so i turned the lights on and had the car running whal i was doing it.the last wire that i hooked up was the light source wire, when i selected the cig lighter glow ring and spliced into it it worked fine.but every time i would touch the wire to it the lights in the dash would go out.i touched it together about 5 or 6 more times swapping different wires and then i tried it one last time and they just wouldnt work at all.but the tach light is working still so those wires are getting power.well i guess i will tinker around with this p.o.s some more in a couple days, all that really matters is that my tack works at night but its pretty dark/inconvienet driving with out them.
well, today i spent four hours on this thing.i ripped most of the dash apart trying to figure it out.i had positive power going to the cluster with no negative.it was all positive,it is getting power from some were were it should be grounded.i figured thet if i cut a wire from the harness going to the cluster and ground it,that it should work.it didnt so know im in a little deeper than i was before.any other ideas?
but why would the dah have no ground? its all +. it just cannot work with out a ground.what i did was cut the red black wire behind the tach and tried to ground it.because every wire was positive.so i will try and reconnect theat then get the new dimmer switch.how do you know if it is going bad or not.a while back it would either be way bright or off with little to no play.I thought it was a little wierd but i didnt think about it until now.
ok, i spliced the wires back together and i replaced the dimer switch with another one that came from a low milage civic that was in a wreck and they still dont work.any other ideas?.
i know my main relay is going to crap, could that have something to do with it?

you are on the right track.
you need a multimeter.
the red / black wire goes POSITIVE 12 volts when you turn on your parking lights.
if you dont have positive 12 volts on that wire when your parking lights are on, check the fuses inside the car. if not the fuses then the wire is shorted from you tapping into it.
the dimmer control is a variable resistor to the GROUND side of the light circuit. theres usually 3 wires on the back of the dimmer:
1) a source ground of 100% strength.
2) the output gound to the dash lights
3) red/black positive for the tiny blub inside the dimmer switch itself if its a 90-91.
you need a multimeter or a test light, something that will show you if you have power or not, you cant guess this sort of thing.
with that knowledge you should be able to fix it, if not seek someone with more experience in your area to help you.
