Default Installing AC

I just got a 95 4 door civic dx, and to make things worse, it doesn't have AC. It has the space for it under the hood. Was wondering how much it would cost to buy and install the ac unit and if it would be possible for someone with moderate car knowledge to install it. This is my first import, just bought it cause it was cheap, I really only have experience with classic american cars but pretty handy. Thanks

shouldn't be that hard if you are familiar with cars and have Helms or something that would help. My cousin took the a/c out of my car and into his and it took him a full day with a friend helping.

I have a related question....If ac was taken out and now I'm putting it back in (previous owner took it out) do you need to buy a new receiver canister thing or can you use a used one? I've heard you have to get a new one for some reason? Can someone clarify this?

I've been wondering the same thing, but from what i've heard, if u have a break in the system, the condensor and accumulator have to be replaced, which sucks be cause that is extra money to spend on something else. I could be wrong, but that's just from what's i've been told.

when installing a surplus or 2nd hand a/c, you have to get new receiver dryer and expansion valve. The rest can go in as is. Just make sure you purge the system with nitrogen and vacuum it before you charge it with refrigerannt. If the evaporator and compressor sits for some time and the intake and discharge lines are not plugged, chances are the compressor will be stuck-up and the evaporator would corrode and have micro holes. The condesner is fine, since this is the dry side of the system.

Yes! if you install used receiver, chances are your a/c would not be as strong, you would also contaminate your refrigerant which causes excessive wear to the expansion valve and evaporator. Receivers are expendable part, as well as the expansion valve. I replace mine every 3 years, at the same time i clean the whole system and charge with new refrigerant. My car is 9 years old and the a/c is really strong, I live in a tropical country and my car is not tinted, yet, I stay cool even at noon!
