TRANNY PROBLEM - GEAR POPS OUT INTO NEUTRAL ON ITS OWN
I have a B16 w/ a GSR tranny. WHen i'm in 5th on the freeway sometimes the gear pops back into neutral by itself.
Can someone please tell me what's wrong and how I can fix it?
Thanks!
James

i have a similar problem in the fact that gears pop out... but not on the freeway...
mine pops into neutral on hard cornering... ill be going say... 55mph in 3rd gear... when i get close to the turn, i heel-toe downshift to 2nd gear... and i crank the wheel hard... the car will start sliding a little and i punch the gas and it pulls the car more into the turn... but somewhere between the car straightening up on the turn and me letting off the gas and stepping on it again, it pops into neutral...
not sure why it does it but it usually only does that on hard turns...

OK i'll check it ASAP.. but i'm curious (I dont know too much about trannies) why would having low fluid level cause it to pop out of only 5th gear?
Thanks

Thanks

if it slips out in fifth gear after the car warms up its the fluid for sure, my tranny would be fine when it was cold, but after 20 min. or so the gear would pop out and i couldn't even hold it in 5th with my hands.

OK so far it seems as if the problem is solved. I put in the GM Friction Modified Syncromesh tranny fluid and everything seems to be working better than ever so far. When the fluids were drained - only a lil bit came out so the dude above was right, my fluid level was really really low.
Anyways, problem solved - thanks everyone!

This is pretty common for 5th gear on all cars, may only be temporarily fixed. If you rest your hand on the shifter while driving (most people like to do it while cruising in 5th) it can damage the transmission.
