Had the R for a year and grinded for the first time today. Did it trying to shift to 1st at about 3 or 4 mph, probably did engage clutch enough. How bad is gear grinding? Did a search but didn't come up with too much. I remember my friends P.O.S. had a problem and grinded every 1-2 and 2-3 shift, at least 30 times a day, and it was a about a month before it gave out.

 

Your friend's transmission was going, your should not be (pending mileage and how you have treated you tranny). Your friend's synchros were going, not a good thing.

It sounds like you just ground the gears a little, nothing to worry about. Just don't make a habit out of it and everything will be fine and last a while.
