Default 4 speed civic hatchback EF

i found a '90 civic hatchback that's 4 spd. i've never seen this before, and neither has anyone else i've asked about it. what is 4spd good for? is it worth keeping or should i convert to 5 spd? how hard is that gonna be? someone's gotta help me out on this.

Me personally i wouldnt touch it besides for a gas saver and converting to 5 spd i dont know how much of a hassle it would be.

Std hatchbacks *like mine* and some dx hatches came with a 4 speed tranny the use is only for fuel economy. Definately switch to a SI tranny for the "sporty" feeling.

With the Si tranny, don't you have to change the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, etc? I was planning to swap a DX 5-speed into my base hatch so as to keep my current pieces.

It's the STD model. It's the lightest of the hatches, but the steering knuckles don't support any other model's axles. You have to use STD model axles with the knuckles or change them out. I have an 88 Civic STD hb and I put a 5-speed dx tranny in it, the same flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate. No need to change these parts unless you want to run any 89 or newer clutches.

I have a 88std model also. You definitely want to get rid of that tranny and motor. The gearing sucks like everyone mentioned its economy model and the gearing is way to long. Just swap it out for something else. You should take advantage of having a std they are the lightest model ef.

I have a 91 STD, I just did a D16Z6 swap and converted to OBD-1. I used a 91 CRX Si tranny, and used the flywheel, clutch, and pressure plate from the CRX also. The stock STD axles worked fine, and the STD shift linkage works also.

i did the same as 90Zcrx

I have a 89 STD, and threw in a 90 DX CRX tranny 5 speed. No other mod was necessary.

No more 4500RPM to do 75~80 mph

Well, thanks for the advice and info about this. Looks like I probably won't need it though after all, hatchback is SOLD . I think that would be cool to come across another one I would put an SI tranny in, and its the lightest model so that a plus .
