Default Del Sol Roof Leak

Hey guys, I've got a friend with a 94 Del Sol that has a horrible roof leak. Not a small leak, either. I understand that this is a common problem and wondered if anyone had come up with a fix or not. Thanks in advance for any help or ideas offered.

on the newer sols, honda redesigned the seals. Mine has never had a problem. A good cheap fix is to buy some silicon grease (dielectric grease) and coat the ******* good. This will also quiet it down. If that doesn't do anything, go to honda and get the new seals. Also, one of the years, they had a recall on the seals (it was either 93 or 94). If you go onto honda.com to their owners club, they will tell you if your car has any recals or not.

There are a couple of things that you could try. It really depends on how bad your seals are at the moment.

The first and best way would be to order new seals from Honda. This is also the most expensive fix ($200- probably over $1000 if Honda does the labor)

Another way is to search a del sol page (sorry I forget which one) but it tells you how to shim the roof so it fits tighter and wont leak. ($20?)

Get some silicon sealant and make your old seals better (making new ghetto seals) ($10?)

These are just some of the things I have heard of being done....there are a couple of threads on this if you search for them.

http://www.teamdelsol.com
Go there and click Information on the top and then click How To and then click on the link Tighten the targa top to stop rattling its #33. I did this to one of my sols and it helped stop alot of the leaking. I use to have it **** water out when i took turns and now it doesnt or if it does its acouple drips.

damn i thought i was gonna be the first post! lol yeah i did the second thing that SolObsession mentioned. All you are doing is adding washers to the roof locking mechanism to lower it and hold the roof on tighter. If you still need more help i could always take the sol apart and get you detailed pics.

xxslayerxx if you don't mind would you be willing to show a step by step process with pics? I'll be attempting this really soon, and I would appreciate, and maybe others as well, some pics to help us along since I couldn't find any elsewhere.

It was also a factory recall, see if that Del Sol has had it done, via the dealership... Basically seals from 95-97 are the new seals.

i tried asking the Honda Dealership in my city about the recall but they said they dont know anything about it. can someone post the letter of the recall up. thanks

So i just took it upon myself and fixed it. This is what you need:

1. Black Silicone Sealant
2. gloves
3. Time to dry and patience.

where the seals on the roof meets the body of the car, aqueeze sealent inbetween the crack from one end (the side of the car where the door area is all along the roof area and to the other side. wipe off excess with dry paper towel first and then wipe it with a wet one. let it sit there and then test with a hose, sit inside and have a buddy spray water on the roof area and on the side.

*remember to take the targa roof off
* i also replace my front seals with the newer re-designed one off e-bay, used
*but this should work for the old seals too
