Default Crank pulley ...Help!

Hey all..I need help! I'm in the process of replacing the timing belt on my 91civic . I have the helms manual, so I know I've dove everything right so far. The problem is that I can't seem to break the bolt on the crank pulley loose. I've tried a long breaker bar with a long extension, & an impact gun (my dads compressor is pretty weak though). I had my dad stand on the break pedal and it seems to keep the crank from moving but that bastard won't come off. Please help I need to have this done by tuesday.

So what exactly is the problem?

Is the crank spinning or is the bolt not coming off?

Here- had a post like this on a different board - with pics!!!

http://honda.hybrids.jp/forum/...part=

Get the LONGEST pipe you can find. Heat the bolt up. Should come off easily.

If the crank still spins with the brakes on, you can lock the crank by removing the access plate from the tranny and inserting a fat screwdriver in between the tranny case and the ring gear on the flywheel.

That's a PITA IMO so fab something up if you have some thin aluminum. Cut about 6 inches of it and put 2 holes in it, one on each end. Remove the tranny access plate. Take one of the access plate bolt through one end of the alumium and the other hole bolts to the flywheel. You might have to remove a clutch plate bolt and use it. That locks the crank 100 solid not gonna move.

that bolt is a bitch to get off. when i was tearing my motor down i had to bolt the flywheel down and get a four foot breaker bar and just wail on the thing until it came off. the impact gun prolly wont do you any good i say just just keep working on it with the breaker bar.

take the dust cover off the tranny. that's the little black sheild that covers the bottom part. this will give you access to the flywheel. put a screw driver in there and have someone hold it. jack the car up enough to give the breaker bar clearance. while someone holds the flywheel, lay on your side and kick the crap out of the breaker. it's also good to cushion the screwdriver with a rag or something so it does'nt damage the tranny casing. that bolt is tourqued to 134 ft. lbs so yeah it's tough but you'll get it.

get a really ******* beefy impact wrench. on the Z6 engine i bought it had an impossible crank pulley bolt. I have an impact thats rated at ~ 400lbs of torque and it would not knock the bolt off. i borrowed a ~ 750lb impact and it finally got the bolt off. it did NOT come right off and i chewed up a cheap non-impact bit but it came off eventually. i had my compressor line pressure at a bit below 200psi (really ******* high; 90 is about normal) and that wrench cranked up. half a can of penetrating lube and about 2 minutes of impacting and that thign came off.

rent a huge ******* 1000lb (maybe a bit of overkill but hey big impacts are cool) wrench to knock that beast off; then to put it back on just hit it with your little impact; it doesn't need to be torqued down to a bazillion pounds like it comes from the factory.

oh and use penetrating lube

okay guys ive taken off this bolt about three times and i tried justabout everthing, by the way dont jam anything between the flywheel and tranny casing, i tried that and it just cracked my bell housing, no biggie but the damn thing rattles when i turn the car on. the way ive done it is put the car in fifth gear and put an impact gun on that sucker. good luck

ow who told you that????? its supposed to be 83-84 ft lbs. are you trying to break it off in the crank??? they actually make a too to hold the puley. or you can weld one up. on the other hand if you have a decent compressor and a good impact gun it will break it loose no problem.

I finally got it off!!! I had to heat it up with a torch & use a breaker bar w/ a pipe as an extension. Got it all back together & everything runs fine. There is a slight whine when it first starts. I assume it's because the belt is too tight. Should this decrease as the belt gets broken in? Anyway...Thanks for all the help.

Get an impact.
The first time i pulled a crank pulley i had to fab up some iron gas pipe fittings.
I used a 24" pipe wrench to hold my homemade pulley remover in place.
Used a 1/2 " breaker bar and 4' extension to break bolt.
don't do this, just get an impact.
Don't use heat, and don't stick anything in the flywheel.

Timing belts cost about $80 from honda. I think autozone is about $30.
I suggest the honda one.
