Default JDM B16 VS B18C1

Ok heres the deal. I did all the research needed for a b18c1 swap into my 96civic coupe and was ready for my boy to do the swap. Now he says he can't get that engine but has a JDM SI right now for me.(I guess JDM b16A2;170hp; not to familar with this engine though, all I know is that its a JDM and 170hp, so Im assuming its still a B series engine) Im curious since both are 170 hp what is the big difference between the two and when I decide to build it up how will it compare to building up the b18c1 I was gonna get. Can I still hit high hp like I was gonna with the b18c1 or will it affect my building process any. What should I expect to hit in the 1/4 mile with this engine and an exhaust to start with. RIght now I just have a sohc vtec, so should I see much difference to. Your opinions please. Also if I get this put it, what should be the next step: turbo kit? cams? ??? Keep in mind I will still be using this for my everyday ride. Thanks.

b18c has more torque..they both can get high peak hps numbers with same set up but the b18c will have more torque

i think b18C is the jdm version of the gsr, this guy is talkn about the usdm, right? just checkn, yea b18c1 has more torque, an about.2 more liters, the jdm si tho would probably be easier to turbo charge if u are planning on it, i think the gsr would be better if u plan on running nos tho

He said the engine was a J-spec acutually, Im assuming that means JDM. Yea I was talking about the b18c1(usdm) VS JDM SI, not the b18c vs jdm SI. Ok so Im losing out on the torque; Any suggestions on what to do next. Turbo kit? What kinda hp boost could I see with a T/B kit, or if I stay all motor what should I do next. Like I said before this is gonna be my everyday ride. Im really just looking to hang or beat my boys car. He has a mustang with a little mod work to it, but I have seen him get beat by honda's and GSR's before. What will do the trick. THanks guys. Oh yeah one last thing. Just cause its a J-spec or whatever, comes from Japan, when I want to add performance parts to the engine, Im still looking for SI parts or B16A2 parts right? Just curious. Thanks again.

How does it run against people with an Ls, or people with Ls vtec's( against an Integra and an ls/ls vtec civic)? Still waitin on advice with what to do next when swap is complete and what I can do to hang with my boys Mustang. I get my ride back Friday.

JDM B16 has as much HP as the USDM B18. The biggest differnce you would feel is the tourqe of the B18.

it really depends on the driver and condition, my bro has a ls hybrid and i beat him all the time considering we're both average drivers(still gotta practice)..but i've heard of ls hybrids beating on b16 hybrids too..

most of the guys around here that have ls hybrids usually take b16 hybrids. The ls make a boat load more tq than the b16

Oh well, I think I'll stay with the B16 and add some performance parts and see what I can do then. ANy suggestions? Also any suggestions on how to keep up with my boys mustang, if possible. Thanks for all the input.

the ls might take th b16 off the line by by 3rd gear the b16 takes the ls out with VTEC. 30 hp makes a big difference

Go with the B16 until u find a j-spec lsd B18 tran. You can always swap the trans. dude. Change the cams, cam sprcket, pistons, port & pol., intake/exhaust. Even with all motor you'll be able to hang wit V8's

Okay First of all a B18c is the Japanese Spec ITR engine
Not always. The JDM GSR motor is also designated as only B18C.

the bomb motor would be a b17a. better rod ratio than the b18c and better torque than the b16a, it's the best compromise.

the reason for the low power numbers is the 9.7 cr on those motors. b17 would be the hardest motor to get a hold of and probably be the same price as the b18. now as far as complete build up, then i still like the b17a. the jdm b16 is rated at 170hp and 116ft-lb but then again that's in japan. if the b17 had a stock cr of maybe 10.2, i'd say the numbers would be around 165hp and 123ft-lb. i know you can't beat displacement but the middle ground for the b18c and the b16a is the b17a. we all know the value of a good rod ratio and the importance of torque; i guess i'll just leave it a that.
