Roll Cage mounting and visual aids help
Ive searched under "roll cage mounting" And Roll cage, havent been able to find visuals, or guide onto where to exactly each bar is set. And how they are welded. How many backing plates do you guys use for them to be securly fastened? Can anyone post or has pictures of a full roll cage installation, that does not block the entry and exit in a 92-95 civic hatchback? Cause Id like to draw and sketch out a cage look and design based on what I can see. I want to have full use of my rear bay area and retain a little if not all of the rear panels with only cutting them up a bit to adjust to the cage. I want a bar clean in the middle to accomadate a front and rear camera. So I am looking for images to best base my sketches off of.
Also how do I save the images as Jpegs? Everytime I right click my computer tries to save the images as bitmaps.
Has anyone done a Black Hatch with red powdercoated cage?
Thanks again for the help any of you guys may be able to provide.
p.s. clear high quality pictures if anyone can spair.
thx guys. didnt think as simple as Roll Cage heehee.

A little OT, but your computer tries to save jpegs as bitmaps because you either:
Have a corrupt IE plug-in installed (most likely the case, unistall all of them).
or
Your temporary files folder is full. Delete your temporary internet files.

not 100% sure about the powercoating of cages, BUT i think it is not allowed because it changed the thickness drassticlly and the welds are not visable.

go to those 2 sights PLENTY of pics on each, also the cage you speak of probably won't be legal and will look like *** and be custom and too much money.
FYI Caged cars ARE NOT ment to be daily driven,

is there any truth in this statement? if so, what racing circuit doesn't allow it? ie NASA, SCCA, NHRA...etc.

yes there is truth to that, many organizations have a rule to not alter the welds in any way, they want to see them in their raw form basically to insure the strength. a lot of places also say it should be migged. and the fact and caged cars arent meant for daily drivers, i have a 6 point in my 89 hatch and drive it everyday no problem at all. i got the S&W weld in kit and put it all in other than the door bars because those are illegal. i love the cage though ill try to get pictures soon

Watch your head.
With just a stock 3-point seatbelt on and no helmet, you can smash your head open on a roll cage all too easily. It's not a question of convenience - I'm sure at some point most of the people here have daily driven cars with bucket seats, gutted interiors, no radio, no heat, whatever - just a question of street safety versus track safety.

A good start would be to read the roll cage section here (has a picture too):

in most cases, a cage that looks ugly and is not practical in terms of cutting up the interior is the safest cage. IMO, a cage design's priority is safety, then second being chassis "stiffening" and etc etc. Most affordable cage would be like an autopower cage. They come bolt in or weld in style.

You think anything without cat pee is a sho kaa
To mastergradechik, there's a good "sketch" in the GCS of an SCCA legal cage. NASA uses the same rules. There's plenty of high quality pics already on HT (see 99fbpsi's post) but many of them are illegal for certain types of racing (and some are just plain stooped).
-travis, who's sho kaa also has plenty of kat pea

why do they require MIG?

beats me, someone is uninformed about welding. TIG welded cages will provide the same penetration as MIG. Powdercoating a cage doesn't alter welds, it covers them up. If they need to see the welds, a section of the cage can be left un powdercoated or grinded away at time of the first inspection to insure proper penetration. Driving a car with a roll cage on the street is dangerous as described already.

i know that tig is a much cleaner and better weld but i have read before in many instruction manuals for cages to mig, no im not misinformed about welding, i weld myself all the time, have helped somone install a cage before too. and i dont have to worry about hitting my head on mine im strapped into 4 point harness with an optional 5th point when i need the extra safety
