Default Burning Oil In VTEC, Valve Guides or Rings?¿?¿?

I have a 94 civic ex with 156k miles on the d16z6. the problem that i am having is that i am burning oil, about a quart every 500-800 miles, and i am unwilling to lose use of the car to rebuild the engine unless i can have a qualified guess as to what the problem is. I Have already done a compression test, from left to right, when hot, it was 185 185 185 180. Also, when i took the plugs out, i noticed the #1 cylinder had some oil build up on the plug, while the rest were generally pretty good.

so i figure this, their is a problem with the #1 cylinder, whether it be valve guide, valves, or ring. The car smokes much worse as vtec engages, but i am unsure if this is just due to higher rpm or if it has to do with the cams engaging.

i have heard that you can test to see if the rings are shot by doing the compression test normally, then squirting a little oil into the cylinder that seems to be suspect, and if the compression bumps back up to around normal the rings on that piston are worn.

i am looking to see if any of you have had similar situations, and i am trying to limit my cost in this repair. If it turns out to be multiple things on this engine, i might as well save my money and get a long block from Recon or a JDM d15b

thanks

Edit: i also had a leak coming from the distributor o ring, but i also fixed that.

Do you have the ability to do a leak down test? If you can, you can tell what part is worn by listening for the compressed air as it is pushed through the engine.

yea i have an air compressor, so i guess i could do a leak down test, but air moving is gonna sound like air, i am not sure if i will be able to isolate it, but i am sure that it won't hurt.

I have the exact same problem dude. I have a b18c1 in my Civic. It burns a lot. I haven't monitored it properly yet but it think it's around 1 quart every 300-400 miles. This sucks! I'll buy my winter beater early and use that while I get the block re-built.

I get the exact same symptoms as you...lots of blue smoke in high rpm's. (5k+) It is most likely the oil rings. If it was your valve seals, you get some blue smoke on startup (which I also get) and at idle. Oil rings are the culprit under load. Hope I didn't ruin your day. To make you feel better, I'm in the same boat as you.

Definatly rings.

I'm in the same situation right now. Though I can get a COMPLETE set of rings for 80$(Canadian...about 0.05 cents US) and will just hone the block and add new rings.
