where did you learn to weld?
im in central jersey and was wondering if anyone new where i can take classes i have more than enough equiptment and ive heard vocational is the way to go any other ideas
I learned by just practicing and having a few friends show me the basics and what to look for.
Probably not the quickest way, but it has worked for me.
One tip a friend gave as to weld two peices together and see how hard you have to hit them before the weld breaks.

i fool around a little but my problem is i dont know how to set up with the exception of mig and stick id really like to start doing some tig save me some dough on a roll cag, im, tube chassis eventually you know that stuff
in general you want to set up a tig machine pretty hot
if you lived closer to me i would be happy to teach you how to weld.....if you get pretty good at it you can easily make a living at it. I worked as a pipe welder for a little over a year until my mother died. I was making almost 22 bux an hour with a Government certification.

the thing is i own a mechanical contracting buisiness and i have probably 15 welding machines and plenty of guys in the field but if i want them to teach me i gotta pay them it will cost me 100 an hour after taxes and stuff but i could see if anyone was willing to do it for me thanks
Yeah i learned right here at work just takes time and practice. What I would suggest though if you do not have any friends with welders. Most local colleges will have a welding class you can take.
If you already have a machine what kind of machine do you have and what type of welding do you want to do maybe some people can give you some tips or your local library may have a welding book.
a few miller xmt 304 cc/cv
a couple miller trail blazers
a couple other suitcase units some roll around gas powered ones
a couple high hats
an arc machine but that pretty much only does strait stainless tubing
a lincoln 120 for really light mig
a permenant high output mig/tig/stick machine pretty old though
and plenty of gas
i think i primarily want to play with the 304 their brand new machines and they do everything
my primary objective is to be able to do my own tube chassis out of 4130. but i understand that might take lots of prectice and or natural skill.
so i would say tig
