Default Free d series vs. expensive b16?

Alright- i just got this engine from a friend for FREE! Its not all that great, b/c its just a D series- not even sure which one, not even sure how old, but im going to assume that it'll fit in my car (88 CRX si). I dont even know if its a 1.6 L, but what ever... ANYWAY... i got his piece of **** sitting in the garage, and im trying to figure out whether or not to bore it out, throw some pistons, maybe a cam, and some rods on there and have fun with it. my only problem is i dont know how much power this engine can make as compared to a b16. I would love to make my car run a low 13 ( with nitrous if necessary) so ill prolly end up turboing it- but my question is should i stick with this d series or should i ditch it for a really expensive b16? i mean how much potential power could i get out of the d series? Enough for my expectations? Lemme know guys- thanks

I would say b16, but you should find out what motor that is first

stick with the free motor. as long as it ran well already, for the amount of money you would spend on that torqueless wonder B16 swap, you could have yourself a sweet little motor that will walk all over a B16.

If it's a D16A6/Z6/Y8 and you're getting the complete engine for free then spending $3000 on that free D will produce much more than a stock B16 swap for let's say ~$3000 complete (bolt ons).

Port/Polish head
Nice cam/internals
Si tranny
ACT clutch
Hondata
P29 pistons
Block work to strengthen
And anything else you want could produce upwards of 165whp...

Check this link...almost halfway down post by Builthatch comparing engines...

VERY good idea as well...i always forget because I myself am going the NA route but the D series blocks do very well boosted and can be done for relatively cheap. For $3000 you can have a nice setup if you play your cards right!

A bone stock B16 versus a D motor that has $3000 of work into it?

I would go with the d series.

Low comp priston and forged rods, lots of head work and a 125 shot

Cheap sleeper

I don't think it makes a difference what the FREE engine is.

$3000 is $3000.

A used Z6 or A6 will be just about the same price as the mount kit for the B motor.
So, after that you have about $2500 to invest in goodies for the D motor. You could rebuild the whole motor and put a homemade turbo kit on it.

Or... you could buy the b-motor and mount kit and HOPE that it doens't need any work bacuase you simply won't have any money left over for any of that.

As long as it's an a6, z6 or y8. Plus your wanting to go turbo anyways...

$380 - Eagle Rods
$450 - Forged Pistons (pick your comp ratio)
$500 - Notched and Posted Block
$70 - CRX Si header w/ adaptor for turbo
$100 - Junkyard T3 (rebuilds are maybe $200 tops) w/ internal WG
$80 - JC Whitney Intercooler piping
$50 - Starion Intercooler (or $$ for a nice one).
$50 - Oil and Water Lines
$30 - DSM blow off valve
$100 - Fuel pump
$100 - Custom Downpipe
$100 - DSM 450cc injectors
$100 - prolly forgetting a few things

= a little over 2k, and all you need is engine management.. vafc or just go uberdata, you'll be in the 250hp range

speaking of that lil 60 hp motor- what did honda do (besides it being a 1.5 L as compared to a 1.6) to make the si motor more powerful? i mean theres a 40 hp difference- what made that gap so big? was it something simple like cams or something? or the computer? if so, it wouldnt matter, b/c i could just replace the pieces that made it so slow... i mean a blocks a block, right? (shows how much i know about engines, right

If you build it and juice it you could run 13s without trying. A friend of mine is running 11s with a 100 shot on an other wise stock d-series CRX.

the SI had a more aggressive cam, valvesprings, fuel maps, compression ratio, and port work from the factory. not to mention the multipoint fuel injection as opposed to dual point. the displacement helped as well.

No matter what motor it is, if it's free then use it. If it is the d15B, 70 hp motor, do a mini-me swap, build the bottom end and boost the "hell out of it" er 14 psi. You'll be in the 220 to 250 hp range. If it is the sohc vtec, build the bottom end then boost the "h*ll out of it". For the 3k you spend on a B16, spend that on what you've got and it will be better than a stock b16.
