ecu/distidutor question
my 90 si has a d16y8 out of a 98 civic ex swapped in. i have the original 90 wire harness still running everything. so im still running the pm6 ecu, which has to be upgraded. my vtech is running off of a msd rpm switch.
so my question is , can i run a p28 ecu with a obd0 to obd1 wire harness without changing or wiring my 90 si,'s distibutor for vtech if i have the msd switch running my vtech?
the pm6 ecu is to weak. the fuel and ignitions are to low for motor im running. i plugged in a pr4 ecu from a dohc, and what a big diffrence, no more shake at idel. much harder and smoother accleration. the only problem with the ecu is that is it makes the car idle at around 1500 rpms due to the advanced in the ignitions and fuel. so the p28 is what i need to get in my car somehow.
anyone what i need to do hear?
thanks

well the first thing wrong with this picture is that "vtech" is a phone...not a honda motor function....VTEC is the correct spelling
to the best of my knowledge, since you have the msd controller handling the vtec, you should not have to re-wire the dist to activate vtec....its already doing that. Basically, you will just be swapping ecus, and adding the necessary hardware to drive the motor the way it should be driven...someone please correct me if I am wrong here...hth

hey thanks for correcting my vtech to vtec lol. no thanks though . this is what i was figuring on. i just wanted to make sure . if anyones sees theres a reason this wont work please let me know
thanks

You can not run the P28 with the 90 Si distributor.
To run the P28 you will need to switch out from OBD0 to OBD1. This includes the distributor and also a 4 wire heated O2 sensor to replace your 1 wire O2 sensor. you can't use the OBD0 distributor because it sends the wrong signals to the ECU. The relutor wheel inside it has less teeth than the OBD1 does - less pulses = running badly or not running at all.
You don't have to use an OBD1 distributor. You can use the OBD2 distributor.
So, if you have the distributor from the Y8 it will work fine with the P28.
You can leave your MSD switch in to control the VTEC activation.

Don't use a Z6 distrbutor. It won't bolt up correctly to the Y8 head. Get a distributor from a non vtec Civic engine or use the Y8 distributor if you have it.
Just to clarify, OBD0 distributors trying to be used with an OBD1 system will cause a no start situation. I've tried this to test it just to be 100% sure for myself.

great info thanks. i heard only the y8' distributor and the 90 distributor will bolt up to the y8. so will the y8 distributor obd2 plugs match my 90 wire harness plugs, or will i need to change the ends somehow? thanks for the great info. i have to get this right the pm6 is killing my performance
oh and the 4 wire o2 sensors i can get from what ? any obd1 or obd2 car? is it part of the harness? im confused anyone have a pic ?
thanks

well i was loking under my hood and have no clue where the o2 sensor is. is it the same one that goes in to the im? or is it actually at the ditributor?
thanks for helping the d series noob

you ever think about using a pg7 5 speed ecu out of an 88-89 integra?
Might give you that extra bit of fuel you will need.
Probably will work better for you than a obd0 pr4.
just my $.02
