ok how can you tell if your altinator is bad??cause everytime i start my car.. theres a loud screatch coming out altinator and the crank shaft pulley. im not sure if my altinator is going bad or where that loud screathing noise is coming from but around that area.. after about 5 - 8 sec that noise goes away.. pls help me out.

same thing happens to me...the light has been coming on...and the noises too..its been happening for about 2 months...no harm YET lol...knock on wood...but i dont think its nessisary to change it now since im saving for my swap

 

replace the belt.That is the sound.

The sound, without actually hearing it, usually comes from A/C or Alt belt squeal.
Thighten or replace as needed.
Bad alternator usually don't make ANY sound, they just stop charging the battery.
If the "batt" light comes on, if the car is hard to start or stalls alot, if the lights are dim or don't work at all. All are symptoms of a failing alternator.
Start saving your pennies, NOW, LOL cause even rebulit ones AIN"T CHEAP.

it can actually be going out. when alternators go out, its usually the brushes that wear out. then the spring usually rubs on the commutator.

heres a pic of the brushes i speak of, its in the center. open yours up if you want and see whuts going on.
