Default REMOVING components of an alarm system?

I recently purchased a 97 Civic EX (has power locks). It has an alarm system that unlocks the door with a remote. When I'm sitting in the driver's seat and go to unlock the passenger door with the switch on the driver's door, I can't.

Do keyless systems have some sort of actuator they put in that prevents normal, factory operation of the lock system? Can I just get under the door panel and rip it out?

No, they don't. Something is wrong with your switch.
