Got a couple tranny questions
Hey All. In the near future I'm going to be upgrading my clutch to an Exedy 92-00 oem replacement clutch. As far as I understand this is doable as long as i get the entire clutch kit and the 92-95 flywheel. Now, is changing a clutch something that can be done or am I better off going to a shop and getting it done. I have a friend whose done a mini-me swap on his car so he's pretty handy and he'll be helping me, but we haven't gotten into anything tranny related yet. Also, I'm kinda leaning towards a lightened flywheel and i know its cheaper to have the oem flywheel machined, but how safe is it to have it machined to say 12-13 lbs? Am I better off going with something aftermarket? I dont have the hugest budget so i'm tryin to save where i can. Other than that, my third gear grinds when i shift at anything higher than 3000rpm. I recently changed the tranny fluid to Gm Synchromesh, but it only helped slightly. Would I be better off trying to get the synchro's replaced or just finding another trans? Sorry for the novel. Thanks in advance!
yes, you must change clutch and flywheel and stay year specific. changing the clutch is not hard just time consuming. you're going to have to drop your trans.. the clutch kit comes with an alignment tool. you'll need some 12 point sockets. search and you'll find some good how to write ups on it or threads with good links and if you have trouble come back here. it's not too hard.
Like Mr C said, stick to the year of your car for the replacement. While you might be able to use another clutch pack from other years,it might not have the correct splines for the tranny itself.Just a thought to consider.

i would buy a lightened one. i've heard of people getting them machined and it does work but if it is not done properly it will be unbalanced and could cause seriuos damage. search lightened flywheel. there are quite a few threads on it.
