Default is a W7 worth it compaired to a W6v2?

I have heard a 12W6v2 in a slot ported box, it was amazing! My sub will be in a sealed box, closer to the smaller sealed side. I have 1200 RMS @ 2 ohms, and I only want one sub. I know that the 13w7 is the flagship of JL but it is really expensive. I really want a JL becuase of the brand name recognition but I don't know to get a 12w7, 13w7, or 12w6v2. Which should I get, Money is not an issue but I don't want to waste it.

ummm...actually it's the opposite
The W7 has both the ability to be extremely loud with extreme excursion and still reproduce sound very accurately.
The W6v2 was designed more for Sound Quality, but don't be fooled, it is a very strong woofer as well.

JL also makes a 13w6v2...I was really pleased when I heard one of these, and since you have plenty of power it will be very clean and loud even in a sealed box.

Go to a store that has both on display and listen for yourself.

You shouldn't listen to people on the internet over something so subjective anyways.

In the end, YOUR opinion is the only one that matters.

I completely aggree, I wasn't trying to make your mind up for you, I was just stating some things I know about the speakers.

I am using the 13w6v2 on a JL 500/1 in ported box.

You people actually pay retail for things? *lol*

Hell I got two 12w6v2's for less than that $...

As for the original question, my main consideration was the difference in power consumption between the two subs. The w7 is pure SQ and good output with massive power requirements to get loud, while the w6v2 is all about small enclosures and good sq, with just enough distortion in its output to make it sound audibly louder (to most people). Basically either way you're way off base if you're planning on using either in SPL competition...the w7 is a pure SQ competition sub while the w6v2 is an incredible everyday jammer sub.

When I finally get a chance to do some building to my prelude instead of everyone else in the world's cars, it's getting a half-wall with 3 12's ported. In order to get the output I would want out of the w7's I would have needed several thousand watts of power, by using the w6v2's I can meet their true potential while staying more around the 1200-1500WRMS range. This also means less need for extra batteries while still having comparable output and sq.

Either way, it's all in your budget, needs, and likes as to which series or brand you go with when it comes to subs. The decision is very trivial in anything other than national competition...as the determining factors of output and sound with subs goes:

1. Vehicle
2. Enclosure
3. Signal/Power level and quality
4. Sub type

in order of influence and importance.....

Personally i think the JL audio subs are crap. And this is comming from a person who used to swear up and down that the W6's are the *****. But compared to some of the other subs at my work.. the JL are severely lacking in terms of engineering and sound quality. Foam surrounds are so 90's..and the thin cast basket is a bit under engineered. The plastic cone is a bit too soft to reproduce accurate bass notes under 30hertz. JL's tend to burn out pretty quickly when theyre pushed too hard for too long. I guess a lack of adequate venting will do that to a sub.. And at $379.98 MSRP per sub..give me a break. Anyhow, onto each his own i say..good luck with your system.

SQ is far more important to me than SPL. any decent sub will have decent SPL when you turn it up, it is the maintaining the SQ at those higher levels that takes an expensive woofer.

Though I live in Denver there aren't very many JL dealers, and yeah I've heard about XXX but I have never seen one, or heard of where I could see one.

LSP what are some better subs in your opinion then.

JL appeals to me because I have heard one that sounded awesome, never heard a better woofer. They have good warrenties, and a good reputation. Some of the other brands, RE, Adire, ... never heard a lot of different opinions, it is always just one dude who loves them. I don't really know if I should drop that much money on a brand that I know nothing about.

Thanks for the feed back guys.

IMO i would reccomend a xxx over a wX any day...

adire audio also makes some good subs, just go out and listen for your self and you make the decision.

My car is sponsored by JL and had the choice of any of their setups... I picked the 12w6v2.... tell you why later one... but first:

LSP > that's just plain stupid.. JL subs are about the best engineered subs available today.. it's your opinion vs that of almost all leading carhifi specialist in the world... but well... you could have told you don't like their sound, their price, or their looks.... but stating they are lacking in SQ and engineering.. HA!

personally, it's very simple.. the 12w7 is NOT worth the extra money over the 12w6v2. BUT the same goes for the 12v6v2 over the 12w3v2....... their isn't a simple price/quality comparison with the subs.. the w7 just is the ultimate sub, for which you have to pay the ultimate price... (+ the ultimate amp to go with it) BUT if SQ is that important to you, GO GET IT!

I love my 12w6v2 and the abillity to listen to a 12w7 every now and then... you'll get used to the sound of a w7 if you own one... I like the feeling I get when listening to one occasionally :D

Foam surrounds are still being used today, even super subs such as the RExxx, adire audio brahma, W7, blah blah blah. Foam has its advantages over rubber, and vicey versy. Just depends on the goal the manufactor is persuing.

The cone on the Jl audio is actually not paper. Now if I can remember the actual material that was being used...hrm. Being the concave shaped cone that JL has, it won't be much of a trouble. Only thing you'll need to worry about is having the cone flex, but you'll only get that if u push it pretty damn hard!

Any sub will burn out if they are pushed to hard for too long. unfortunately, JL audio never intended to make a killer SPL-oriented beast. But we gotta remember that even the W6 was created 10 years ago, so I doubt they have designs like anything of today

Forgot to mention...

The W7 will have more potential output than the w6v2 (comparing the same size). Sound quality? Just the same really..

The 13W6V2 is compareable to the W7 and it is a great sub if you don't wanna blow all your cash on a W7 but the W7 is still better. I run two 13w6vs off a 1000/1 and they pound and sound great.

BS, name subs that can compare to a single w6v2, not many of them
